For some time I have been trying to post a photo of the Screaming Yellow Zonker for you all to enjoy. Now I'm pretty good with things that have chains and sprockets but not-so-good with electronics. I just had my daughter over to help me figure out how to post a picture. Guess what? The file is too big to transfer. My new medium price but not top line Nikon camera uses too many pixtels. My daughter tells me I have to re-size the picture before I can post it on BF. Unfortunately, my frustration window closed before we were able to figure it out.

The next step up the tech ladder is asking a grand daughter to help me. What do people do who don't have kids or grand kids?

Learn to use Photoshop? Actually, most cameras nowadays will produce a file size that's much bigger than can be practically used on a forum like this.

Alternatively, many cameras will allow you to shoot at lower-than-maximum resolution. It may be easier for you (or maybe not--digital cameras typically have awful user controls) to take a downsized picture in the camera rather than fuss with software afterward. You might have to wade through the user manual to see how to do this, though.

Internet explorer and I use XP. Open up the pic from your directory and on the left hand side you will have an option of sending the "Chosen" file as an E-Mail.

Window comes up and I choose the "Show more options" Option. I then choose the Large option and click on it. An open E-Mail comes up showing your pic as an attachment

Open this up and with my set up it opens it in Microsoft Photo Editor.

Go to File---Save and I save with the name I want in the directory I want.

Job done except to delete the open E-Mail

The attachment started off as 1.36Mb and has finished up as 140kb.on the E-Mail and 91.6 within BF

Try uploading it at www.photobucket.com. They take pretty much any size photo, and resize it for posting on the net. Copy and paste the [IMG] link.

Or you can post process it with the Microsoft Office Picture Manager. Go to "Edit Pictures" and "Resize" or "Compress Pictures"

Or, your camera has a setting that allows you to change the resolution. I recommend leaving this on high so you get better pictures, but you could also change that too.

This is must-have software for photos imho.
Irfanview also makes it easy to crop your pictures so that only the part of the image you want to display is shown.

I just use pikasa (free software from google) to edit all my pictures. With that it's simple (you just click sync to web) and it automatically uploads all the pictures in a folder to your gmail account space. Once that's done, I just click the picture icon here when composing a post and copy and paste in the url of the uploaded picture. Cheaper than buying photoshop and doesn't require me to actually modify my pictures.

There are lots of ways to resize and change file-type of a photo without having to spend a lot on software. Even Paint (standard in Windows) can do it.

+1 for Photobucket. They'll compress the photos down for you. And it's very easy to use.

Why resize it? Just upload it to a free online photo hosting site, like photobucket (that's what I use), or flickr, or picasaweb. It's easy to upload the pics. Just make sure you make the pics "public" so everyone can see them.

Some of us have a natural ability for computers, in my case more than my kids, though I am 65. Others, like my wife, are hopeless. She doesn't dare divorce me because she needs me to constantly fix her computer problems. On the other hand, she has skills that I don't. Everyone should marry their opposite, so you can compliment each others skills.

Since you probably married for love, rather than practical reasons, the suggestions by others are all good, and I hope one works for you. (My wife and I love each other too, despite being opposites in many ways. Too bad she doesn't like cycling, except to go to yard sales.)

I have a second, lower priced camera that I set up for taking pictures I want to email, or post online. I set it to 640x480 (VGA) and medium 'fineness'. Pictures are about 50-60kb size, with an occasional one in the 100kb range.

Picture Resize, as described above by Dellphinus, is just the ticket if you use a PC.

Lots of software choices can do that, but the camera itself may be able to save reduced size copies. I know that my Nikon S550 can. Check the manual.

The thing is that picture resize alone may result in a very small picture to fit in the max limit of BFN With Irfanview.com, one can also change the saved compression ratio, which decreases slightly the image quality but gets it a whole lot less K, so one can fit a large picture still under the limit.

Thanks for all of the suggestions but I'm thinking that all of you are overlooking the spin-off benefits of asking a grand daughter to show me how to do it. I don't get that many 1 on 1 opportunities to bond with them. It would be a shame to pass one up.

No need to pass up such a great opportunity. Ask your granddaughters to help you learn to use one of the free photo processing software offerings.

Uploading to Photobucket or similar is a great way to store and share pictures, but it is very useful to be able to work with your photos so that they look just how you want them to look. The great thing about digital cameras is that you can take lots and lots of pictures and then pick out the ones you like without having to pay for developing them all.
I take a lot of pictures while on my bike. I don't always have time to frame my pictures just right, so I just point the camera towards my subject and take care of the fine details at the computer later. Irfanview lets me crop out the unwanted parts of the pictures. I often use the custom fine rotation feature to compensate for not holding the camera quite level. I can even do a little correction of the colors and brightness if needed.
None of this is as hard as it sounds. I bet your granddaughters can have you processing like a pro in no time.
