Do Bicycle Shorts Decrease Sperm Output?? What else?

Not sure how many 50+'rs care about sperm production, but here is an article listing activities that may decrease sperm production, including wearing bicycle shorts.

"However, wearing tight bicycle shorts for an extended period of time is a bad idea as well, Dr. Wharton adds. The more constricted a man's pants are, the less hospitable an environment he creates for sperm production."

and cell phones, and laptops, also!!

Do you agree?

I'm still waiting for the erectile dysfunction associated with the use of a bicycle saddle. As a single fifty something with very limited prospects, that would be a relief.

I've got 4 kids. If I didn't have a vasectomy, I'd be wearing bike shorts all the time, if it's true.

My wife was on the same track of logic since it took us a few months to get pregnant with our second. (didn't ride before the first one was born)

I'd keep telling her, "Lance has one ball and 5 kids."

Bikes: More than I really should own.

I already have four boys and two foster sons. If my sperm count drops I can live with it.

This reminds me of an apocryphal bike story that made the rounds back in the 70's, back in the days of Italian wool shorts:

There was this young bike rider, a guy in his early 20's, very dedicated to the sport. He trained real hard, ate all the right stuff, got plenty of rest, did quite well in the local races. The only problem was, he always had this excruciating pain in his scrotum whenever he rode. It got so bad that he had to make a choice: have an operation to remove his balls, or quit cycling. Well, he was so dedicated that he decided to have the surgery. Shortly after he had recovered from the surgery and he was back on his bike, feeling much better, his club hosted a session by a top Italian cycling coach. The coach came and checked the position of all the riders. He watched this young guy ride, then he told him:
"Use stem 5mm shorter."
"OK"
Frame size is 58?"
"Yes"
"OK, good. Saddle is at 79 cm from bottom bracket, with 8.5mm of setback?"
"Yes, that's where I've got it."
"Good. You wear Vittore Gianni size 4 shorts?"
"No, I wear size 3."
"No, you wear size 4. I have rider just like you back in Italy. Same size, same build. Wore size 3 shorts. Had excrutiating pain down there. Switched to size 4, and pain disappeared."

We are 50+, who wants them? A new baby at this age would be disastrous (for the kid).

I had that issue dealt with surgically as well. Now I'm just worried about the effects of getting numb, since I have yet to find the right combination of seat, position and attire. :/

Well, I recall that men who wear jockey shorts tend to have lower sperm counts then men who wear boxer shorts (kinda wonder who did that study). The reason is that sperm production goes better at a lower body temperature. That is why the testicles dangle in a little skin pouch instead of being tucked into the abdomen like more self respecting organs.

Ah-----------reason 7 for riding a recumbent. On a bent you dont have to wear skin tight biking shorts with a dead sheep skin. Recumbent riders are studs!!!!!!!!!

The best part about having kids...is making them!

Stupid studies,so the world has a few less people....like we need more.

At the age of 60+ I couldn't care less about sperm production. All I can say is, the cycling shorts are great for keeping the balls tucked up and out of the way. I really hate sitting on them.
