I have looked at Terry bikes (pictures) and why is it that neither of them seem to have a step-through frame? That really puzzles me. To the previous writer, I do plan to stick to Bike Stores that have good reputations and have bikes for women. I've got some good recommendations so far - now all I have to do is to find dealers near me that has these bikes in stock~!

Georgena Terry started the company to make performance and racing-style bikes for women, not city bikes. You can get their catalog sent to you to see what she does now, or get on her website. The Terry Cycles company is still going strong, and have many design options for fitting smaller women.

If you call them on the 800 number with a question such as "what bike is best for me?" you'll most likely end up speaking to Georgena Terry and get the benefit of her experience in engineering bicycles for women of all shapes and sizes. From my experience consulting with her on a bike for my wife, she has excellent customer service skills, and of course experience in engineering bicycles. Terry was the original WSD bicycle, and does not make bikes for men. There is a mixte in their line-up, but not a fully-dropped step-through.

Ms. Terry is no longer the owner but focuses on new products, customers, and disseminating correct information about her products. Bottom line is, she loves to talk to customers and potential customers. Mrs. Road Fan is sold on her products.

Keep in mind as you look for a match, that the look of many bikes can be changed by raising and lowering teh handlebars or the saddle, or by installing different handlebars.

Don't limit your search to bikes designed specifically for women. It's entirely possible that you'll find the best fit on a bike that was not designed for women.

The company's website can direct you to dealers.

I've got one of these

<htpp://www.xootr.com/folding-bicycle.html>

Is this the type of thing you were looking for? If so, I'd warmly recommend it.

Plus - well made, comfortable, rides well, low frame makes mounting easy, good brakes and shifters, uses standard bike parts so spares aren't a problem, folds easily
Cons - not the most compact when folded

I'm very happy with mine

What I wound up getting.....

Hi,
First, thank you for all your advice/feedback.

I didn't try a whole lot of bikes, but I went to my favorite bicycle store, and they had just gotten in a "small" Specialized Vita which I test rode, and I felt very comfortable with it except for the seat. So I just exchanged seat for a little more comfortable one and put on a basket and today I'm riding it home from the store, and doing my best to avoid major hills. In SF that's hard.

After all the discussion I wanted to get a folding bike, but I didn't want to spent more than I was, and the folding bikes were very expensive. The Specialized was $400 and a nice bike. I'm still getting used to the gears being on both sides of the brakes and not just on the handlebars!

Thank you.
