Stumpa. From Sweden. If you see them anywhere, try it you won't be sorry. Unless you don't like cigars at all, then you'll be sorry.

Thanks for all the health reminders. I think by the time you hang around 50+ you take your own chances and pay your own dues. I personally am more afraid of spending next weekend in southern CA instead of heading to Park City for our anniversary. The air in CA stinks as bad a cheap cigars.
I appreciate some of the reminders of good cigars, and some good beers. STUMPA, Sweden, that is a new name that I will have to check out.
Is anyone coming to the Big Smoke in Vegas Nov. 12-13. I hit that every few years and get a boatload of good sticks as well as Port, Single malt samples and the food is outrageous. PM me if you will be here. I have tickets for Saturday night.

Quit smoking everything 8 years ago. Not going to try it again. You all have fun hacking and coughing and spitting! ;-)

I don't know you, and you may not be the idiot you seem, but you are certainly an *******. My doctors are very intelligent, very knowledgeable and very good at what they do which is diagnosing and treating cancer. I owe them my life. I don't even owe you civility.
My doctors told me that the vast majority of people they see with the kind of cancer I had are longtime heavy smokers and/or heavy drinkers. When they tell me that the very infrequent cigars I smoked (without inhaling) and the moderate drinking I do were very unlikely to have caused my disease, I believe them. All I believe of you is that you are an opinionated jerk.
They said that the heavier cigarette smoking I did for 5 years ending 30 years before was a stronger possibility, but still not probable. Same for the somewhat heavy drinking I did in my 20s and 30s. They told me about many possible factors such as the mold I may have breathed while repairing homes in NOLA after hurricane Katrina, chemicals in the air at the composite manufacturing plant where I have worked for 25+ years, even a history of oral sex has been shown to be a cause for some throat cancer.
Bite me.

No I will not bite you.
You answered your own question of what caused your cancer. Smoke away, it's your life.

Are you an oncologist or a medical researcher? Interesting that you have such certain knowledge of things that experts can only discuss in terms of statistical correlation and possibility. It is certainly possible that the fairly small amount of cigarette smoking I did so long ago or the drinking caused my throat cancer. It is also possible that those things did not and that one or more of any number of other things caused it. The very minor amount of cigar smoking I did has an extremely low chance of being a factor.
Whatever caused it, I had it. Knowing what caused it won't change that fact. While the statistics may not provide good answers as to what caused an individual occurrence of cancer, it does tell us what things to avoid to decrease the likelihood of getting cancer. Smoking cigarettes is definitely one of those things to avoid as is heavy drinking, excessive eating and many other things. As far as I know, going online and pretending to know things that you don't know is not a significant cause of cancer, so you can be glad of that. Have a great life.

So BluesDawg,
Have you or your highly intelligent doctors ever considered genetics as a possible cause of cancer? You know it can skip generations right?

Moving to another country might give you better odds, though. There are countries with higher smoking rates but lower cancer rates than here. The problem is that we are exposed to lots of other carcinogens, especially in our food and air, and when you combine them with tobacco smoke, the odds don't go in your favor.
I'd already quit smoking long before my cancer, but since, even if my cancer doesn't recur, I'm still more prone to a new cancer than most, I've tried to lessen my exposure to carcinogens in any way I can. Please keep the cigars far, far away from me.

Sure, they mentioned that as well. Another in the long list of possible causes. I don't suppose we can eliminate breathing car exhaust either.

If Proposition 19 passes in my state there could be a new brand of Cigars called "Rolled Gold Blunts". But you will need more than a few slices of Cheese and fruit to go with that cigar.
I have discovered I am destroying myself and the earth by eating meat, drinking coffee, living in the suburbs, riding CF, wearing cycling cloths and wearing a helmet and owning a car and having a travel trailer and Truck. My solution has been simple. Do what I want and do it the way it works for me and my family.
I would advise taking this topic with a grain of salt but that is bad for your blood pressure so I won't.

Bud, I appreciate your concern and also what you have been through. That had to be a crappy period in your life. My kids also get on my back about the cigars. I don't smoke many, but they sure are enjoyable. I promise to never knowingly smoke within 10o miles of you.
My wife is from Salt Lake City and raised in a Mormon family that had a very healthy lifestyle as far as food, drinking and smoking. Both her parents died by the time they were 60. My dad was a life time 2 pack a day Winston smoker. He is now 91. I hope I got his cancer resistant genes.

And BD is right about the difficulty of direct association of cancer to a direct cause. If we could easily directly blame things for it, we'd have all the public service messages warning us about all kinds of other things, just like we did with smoking and lung cancer. Those ads did help cut down smoking. But they had an added effect of stifling funding for lung cancer research, a real disservice for the many never smokers suffering and dying from lung cancer right now. For that matter, most of our diseases come from our lifestyle, but we've never singled out anything else for the kind of association we gave smoking and lung cancer. Forgive my rant, but it's a subject that I learned more about than I ever wanted to. Click the link in my signature to learn more.

I won't argue with the first statement. The second comes as a relief. The third is simply not true and the fourth makes no sense as I clearly stated that I would not be smoking.

I have taken care of, operated on and saved the lives of many hundreds of cancer patients as a general surgeon for the past 25 years. I do, as a result, know a fair amount about cancer of the throat and its causative factors.
Let me suggest to you that no one questions the relationship of alcohol and tobacco use in the
cause of throat cancer. Remove these two causative factors and the physicians who specialize in the treatment of these cancers would find themselves out of work.
As a physician I would never blame a patient of mine for his or her disease by the choices they have made. Akin to rubbing salt in an open wound. Nor would I ever ever suggest that tobacco use, in any amount was ok. It is not. I literally can not recall a single patient of mine with lung cancer, esophageal cancer or throat cancer that was not a smoker, or in the case of esophageal cancer, a smoker and drinker. I know that their out there, but rarer than hens teeth in my experience.
And I agree, knowing what caused it will not change the fact that you had it. But a perspective that suggests that perhaps 4 or 5 cigars a year are harmless endorses an activity that kills.
So good luck and riding to a fellow over 50 cyclist that also happens to love the harmonica. I suspect our similarities are far greater that our differences... but thats another thread .

I direct each who read this to scroll up and click the link in Bud Bent's last post. If you can afford a few cigars, how about donating an equal amount to the LUNGevity walk.
I will trim a butt and smoke a Greycliffe and say a prayer for you all. (Its kinda weird eh, praying while smoking a cigar, but as Churchill said, I smoke my cigar to the glory of God.) May you have many good years of riding and enjoying the people around you.

I enjoy a good cigar as well. With my history of extensive chemical warfare on my brain I'm happy to make it another day. Old age is overrated. And I mean that.

My father smoked a pipe for many years until he quit around the age of 60. The tobacco he smoked smelled more like burning floor sweepings to me.

I like a nice torpedo or robusto the evening after a day of riding. Ashton's, Greycliffe and Alec Bradley are favorites, but any quality smoke is fine by me.
I like to have some cheese, Dubliner or Sharp cheddar, some cut up fruit and grapes and either a red wine or Pale Ale. To me that is a great celebration of a good ride.
What say the other 50+?

I had one genuine cuban cigar. It was wonderful and I could finally see why people enjoyed them. That was till I was suddenly sick to my stomach and had to run to the bathroom and spent the rest of the day puking my guts out.

At the risk of offending some of you, I have to state this: Those of you who smoke cigars are probably the same people who object to people smoking cigarettes because of the health risks to the smokers and from SECOND HAND SMOKE. But then you jump on the trendy cigar bandwagon and smoking now is just fine. Never mind the second hand smoke you all and others inhale while pontificating on the various qualities of the tobacco your stogies are made of and where they were hand rolled, etc.
Is ZEBCO still around?
