Those who regularly ride bikes (and for that matter trikes, quads, etc) tend to take a positive interest in all manner of human powered vehicles.
Those who pose on the Internet tend to put a negative slant on anything that may diverge from their aspirational grouping.

I was in Newport Beach, CA when a guy pulls up in this. I liked the disc / trispoke wheelset which IMO changed the look of the bike.

It strikes me the technology is heavier and the drive train much less efficient. One cannot stand to accelerate and I suspect fast cadence is not possible i.e. 100 to 150 rpm. The advantage is the low profile and great aerodynamics. Rbents would be great for flat areas where one can keep the speed up with a lot less power. It seems ideal for long flat rides where comfort would be nice to have.
If I could just figure out how to sell somebody about five pounds of the thirty pound bike weight.....................

Ok, the only thing stopping me from having a recumbent is cash and to a lesser extent space. This year was the wifes turn to buy whatever bike she wanted (Bianchi Volpe). My turn is coming and I like the Bacchetta 26. Great all around, I don't need to be the fastest thing on the planet and I don't mind working harder on the hills, although I am not convinced its any harder based on my recumbent climbing experience. As for waving it makes me think of Harley guys, there is a group that only gives "the cool guy whats up nod" to other Harleys. I think its funny when they accidentally acknowledge a honda shadow.
I want a Cruzbike Silvio but 2100 for a frame set that is not made out of cut up formula one cars or compressed truffles is ridiculous. I am making my own out of aluminum, we'll so how that goes this winter and if it's not what I expected I'll be forced to buy the bacchetta now wont I? I ride all types and a bike is a bike to me. The stable includes
BMX 20 and 24"
26" MTB
Just sold my single speed 29
Bianchi Volpe
Centurion road bike (1984) free bike and I like
Burley Rocknroll tandem
homemade USS recumbent
Coming soon Cruzbike knockoff and possibly Bacchetta Giro 26.
All these bikes are my friends.

Was just reading BikeSnobNYC and came across this video of an off-road recumbent: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujgqwZW6ZmM

That was curious. I looked at another one on youtube as well that had a bit more challenging terrain. But it still seems that a bent would be at a significant disadvantage on the more technical climbs where you need to shift your weight or a steep up hill climb.
