step - My daughter is getting a masters degree at the University of Nottingham this year, and I understand from her that school is closed tomorrow because of snow. How bad is it there?
By the way, it was 75, clear and sunny here yesterday and I got in 32 miles, but it's only in the 60s today. Winter has come to Florida. Then this morning arrived and I had a clear 30 mile commute by car into work. Sussex commuters have seen the chaos that has been on the roads in the rest of the UK and stayed at home. We had 6" overnight. They are saying that this is the worst weather in Sussex for 60 years. More snow- colder temps and stronger winds than anyone can remember. But we have it mild compared to the rest of the country. |
In NE Ohio we have not had any snow since last March. Today we got a dusting of snow and the East side of Cleveland is destined to get some Lake Effect Snowfalls over the next several days which could be significant. Depending on the wind direction, as it crosses Lake Erie, the lake effect snows can hit one area with a heavy snow while a town just to the West may receive little to no snow.
I plan to ride outside tonight in temps around 30 degrees with winds of only 8mph. It should be a nice evening to ride. There may be several other riders in our group who will meet at my house. We only plan to ride around 1.5 hours then watch the Cav's game and the return of the "Quitness" Lebron James. Since its a shorter ride, than the usual 2 hrs, I think I'll take the guys on a hilly route.;) |

The winds are due to shift to NW which will bring Lake Ontario's Lake Effect machine to bear on Rochester and vicinity by tomorrow! I better get a ride in today!! |
"whole of the UK is experiencing sub zero temps"
That is on the 'C' scale.. right? Below ZERO here on the fahrenheit scale... which is much colder.. much. Road last winter at 5F with a 20's + wind. I never look at wind chills.. why let that play on your thinking. I just pile the clothes ON............ |

The vBulletin curse filter should be modified to reflect the BF audience. It currently balks at the "s" word **** but happily accepts another rude and ugly four letter word. Snow.
|
We've suffered through some daytime temps in the low 50's, but we're headed south for a January 1st century with expected temps around 70 degF:D
|
I'm having to wear a sweatshirt on top of my normal underarmor type shirt or jersey, and gloves with fingers. Plus the cold air makes my nose run! We have no valid reason to complain here, but I will, because I'm tired of it already. Can't wait for longer and warmer days... gimme the desert heat!

An hour and a half of hills, beer, and watching Lebron return to Cleveland. That's livin' large.

Cooler than normal with some rain here. With La Nina, the prediction is for a cooler and drier winter.
It will be interesting to see how the Cavs fair against Lebron and the Heat. I do not know what they were paying him in Cleveland but one source shows him making $14.5 million per year with the Heat. |
I've been riding the tempreature ( in F) for each of the last 3 days ... 28, 29, and 34 miles. The wind was 15, 25, and 10 mph each day. There is a light dusting of snow in the corn and bean fields. My riding outfit includes leg warmers, riding shorts, underarmour shirt, thick jersey, a light fleece and a windbreaker. I wear an ear band under my helmet. The outfit is good for 3 to 4 hours riding down to 20F to 25F, except when the wind is over 25. It helps if I slow down to decrease the wind effect of wind chill. I also spin a little faster to stay warm.

http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...quot-materials. Providing it is dry- this will be my topcoat in cold weather. And looks like the end of the snow round here. Roads are very icy so still not many venturing out on the roads- in cars or on bikes. Exception is on the routes up to the hills. Plenty of MTB's on the way to some FUN. And 12" snow with an MTB is Fun. Or so they say. |

S. Michigan is getting the same weather as UK, and I'm 5-10 degrees further south. So be glad for your gulf stream! Our temps are a few degrees below normal, but not enough to remark about. Not much riding to do - this is my chore season. In another month, I'll start swimming class. Indoors!
The other day, Buffalo NY got over 2 feet of lake-effect snow. I'm not sure even one of these would work. http://www.cadfanatic.com/wp-content...bike_green.jpg |
Very cold ride through the forrest today. Weather forecast missed by quite a few degrees and I was not prepared for so cold conditions. Beautiful weather though.

Today was the coldest I've ridden in yet. It was in the high 30's, cloudy and windy.
On top I wore 2 Under Armour turtlenecks, a fleece pullover with 1/2 zip, and a windbreaker. On bottom I put on smartwool long johns under my leg warmers & shorts. I was concerned if this would effect how the leg warmers would stay up, but it worked fantastic. I also wore a cycling hat, ski socks, neoprene boot type shoe covers, warm ski gloves, a fleece neck gator pulled over my mouth. I was perfectly comfortable. I know I can ride in lower temps because when we made a pit stop I took off my fleece to let a shivering woman who was underdressed wear it the rest of the ride. I was noticeably cooler after that, but not cold. |

Thursday morning, I crossed the Peace Bridge at about 11:30 with no snow in sight. I 190 was closed at Elm Street, so I had to pick my way over the skyway and out through Lackawana. I think I just made it through before they put the driving ban in effect. Half a mile south of the Thruway on NY 75, the road was bare and dry. Friday evening on the return trip, the Thruway was re-opened, but the snow was piled high on the shoulder, encroaching on the right lane. Over the bridge to Canada, and not a speck of snow in sight. Can't tell ya how many times I've seen that happen over the many years I've been making that crossing. |
Step, What we do with snow around here is play in it ;). We're skiers so the more snow the better. For me, I just don't push riding the bike in cold weather. I prefer speed skating during the week for workouts (rink nearby) and skiing weekends with some older guys I also ride with.
Have fun and look at cold weather riding as gravy, get out when you have a chance. :thumb: |
