Louis, I ask you to NOT listen to well-wishers here who wish you to heal quickly. IMHO, heal properly, completely and correctly - regardless of the time it takes, TAKE IT
Your body will respond as it will - and you must listen to it. Also, pay the $$ and go to AND listen to your specialists. Shortcuts come back to bite you badly
Been there, done that.
I am still amazed that I can walk and ride ..
Louis, take care and you know as we all do, that we are just here for a while.
Peace, Health, and Happy Days.

There is not much to nothing that can be done for a fracture/cracked rib, I have had one during a fall on a bike. How about your fractured spine? Do you just have to tough it out? If so how much time have you been told is it going to take? Good luck to you.

OK, so you were listening to the radio and heard:
"Well, shake it up baby, twist and shout....", and you just couldn't resist?

I remember from years ago when a friend cracked ribs. His "sympathetic" wife put him in the garden with a lawn rake and told him to do something usefull instead of sitting around moping.
It was either the lawn rake or the Hoover---so the wife was thinking of him
And he swears that the gentle exercise worked wonders. He got a Divorce 6 months later.

Louis,
The rib will hurt for 3-4 weeks and heal by 6, as said. Experience from racing MX taught me the 6 week rule to be hard and fast. The spinal fractures seem really scary but I have had them, along with 2 laminectomies and a 2-level P.L.I.F. with plates, screws and cages. They actually heal fairly quick and totally if you let them heal completely, in their time, as said above, let them heal completely and don't freak about the time span factor.
Hope all goes as well as it can and that you heal up completely and totally. The bicycle will be waiting for you as patiently as you let it, just take care so you can get back to riding.

I still managed to break a few ribs, but never more than one at a time (basketball).

The ribs are all i have broken in MX racing since 1973. Several times though, no explanation. A shoulder separation playing HS football ended that career in my sophomore year. Never had a bad injury beyond childhood scrapes and bruises on my bicycle. I have bee extremely lucky bicycling and Racing dirt bikes. Good gear makes the difference. Happy New Year at ya, B.Carfree.

Reminds me of the guy who was moping around, frowning at his troubles. His friend saw him and told him "Smile--things could be worse". He decided to take this 'good advice', so he smiled, and sure enough--things got worse!
Hope this does NOT happen to you Louis.

The currently running thread about Neck Pain prompted me to dig up my old thread from Dec/Jan to let the many well wishers know that I'm doing quite well these days. Although I do have some residual soreness in my back and side, it hasn't been a problem.
Oddly enough, Whiplash has set in. Researching the internet on the subject, I find that it is not uncommon for that to happen month(s) after a trauma occurs.
I've been riding my trainer using a MTB, which sports higher bars than my road bikes, with only minor neck difficulty. Have not yet been on a road bike but we'll see how that goes if the weather ever breaks.

I hope you get better soon ! Rib injuries aren't much fun.
I know a guy who fell off a ladder putting up some Christmas lights. He managed to break his left arm and his right leg (don't ask me how). He said he felt totally humiliated because he was forced to call WheelTrans (A special transit service for the disabled) to get to his banking job downtown.

I missed this thread the first go round. Glad to hear that you're on the mend Louis.
Remember to properly lace up those skates if you want to try out for the IceCapades next year.

Thanks for the update and best wishes for your continued recovery. Are you planning on the 3rd Annual Fifty-Plus ride in Ann Arbor in July, with the Ohio gang? I'm a Michigan native and it would be a nice reason to visit the family.
One of my colleagues, a sweet young native of Ohio went to Ann Arbor for a wedding last year. She graciously brought me back a University of Michigan souvenir, but said she felt "dirty" when she went into the souvenir shop.

Glad to see you are making progress. Yep, it seems to take a long time and as we heal from one thing something else crops up. But, you'll make it.
By the way, what do you consider a "repectable distance on a road bike"?
