I've been on synthroid for about 15 years.. I had Graves Disease and they nuked my thyroid. Seriously couldn't tell much of a difference. Metabolism is supposed to slow down some. Not sure if it's the synthroid, now other meds due to heart valve replacement 6 years ago, being in better shape or just getting older, but I do eat a lot less and healthier now and weight comes off more slowly. My endurance is pretty good and can do just about anything physically that I want to do.
Good luck.

I've been on Synthroid for about 10 years with no noticable ill effects. I believe the medication has been very beneficial in weight loss and some other minor medical challenges that I was experiencing. I get my dosage adjusted twice a year.

I've been on synthroid since the radiation treatments on my throat zapped my thyroid. I can't tell any adverse effects. I was feeling somewhat lethargic before the meds. Took several months of increasing doses to get the levels up to normal.

It had a huge effect for me. It seems for me at least that my HR would not rev up. For a while there it wouldn't go over 123 BPM. No matter how hard I tried, I would go anaerobic over 123. Prior to this my max. sustainable HR was 165. In playing around with my dosage I have gotten it back up, but can't seen to keep my HR there. It's very frustrating. In Oct I did The Tour de Safford 104 mile with 123 as my max HR. I guess you know it wasn't my fasted century. I went out for a while today to do some hill repeats and got it into the 140's only so I went home. It was to cold for me anyway.

My wife has been Synthroid-dependent for 18 years, following a total thyroidectomy because of cancer. Because dosage titration is so critical and somewhat tricky, this is one medication for which the generics and the brand-name formula are not equivalent, because the "inert" binders and fillers radically affect absorption rate. If she forgets to take her Synthroid for more than one day, she turns into a zombie. She takes a slightly higher dose than the doctor would recommend based on TSH tests, but still shows subtle signs of hypothyroidism, rather than hyperthyroidism.

Revisiting an old thread:
My mother always had very low thyroid function, and offspring of a genetically hypothyroid parent reportedly have a 50% chance of inheriting the same condition. My resting pulse of 43bpm has always been lower than I deserve for my good, but not elite, level of fitness, and my body temperature has generally hovered a few tenths below the textbook normal of 37.0C. I recently recovered from the flu, my first major illness in 15 years, and now I sometimes have basal oral temperature readings as low as 35.2C = 95.4F. I have become much more sensitive to cold than before, and my hands feel even colder than usual to my wife. I also realized that I had run out of kelp tablets, which I have taken daily for many years. My athletic and mental performance have been a little sub-par, which I had attributed to age.
I restarted my kelp supplements today and added an herbal thyroid support pill, and I shall track my symptoms over the coming weeks. If I am still having trouble, I'll need to get checked for autoimmune problems.

Our 16-year old cat was found to be hyperthyroid and we now rub a compounded topical preparation of methimazole on the inside of his ear twice a day. It's helped a lot. An option for some cats -especially younger ones - is to take a 'thyroid cocktail' with radioactive iodine at a special veterinary facility. The effect is to zap enough of the thyroid to cut down excessive levels. Enough thyroid survives, usually, to result in normal levels. I've taken care of people hospitalized for the same thyroid cocktail. That's mostly done on an outpatient basis these days.
Our cat's cycling has not been affected by his thyroid issues.

Bumping an old thread. I have just been diagnosed with Graves disease, and in less than 3 weeks my endurance and strength have plummetted down to 20% of what it used to be. It is completely dishearting.
I'm seeing the doc tomorrow for a decision on the treatment. For those who have been through this, does your fitness level return to where it was before? It has ade me very anxious.
Thanks a lot.

You might want to start a new thread with Graves in the title, for feedback from posters with experience.

I've taken Thyroid med for 20 years now due to enlarged thyroid. It will take several months to get it right but once they do you will notice no difference with no side effects, perfect replacement for the real thing.
