Later a 1951 Chevy 2 door. Later a new Gogomobil (2 cylinder, 2 cycle from Germany). Then a 1953 Ford 2 door. Also owned a nice Raleigh 3 speed touring bike. |

http://www.cramersweeney.com/brandprix/ Edit: I was born in 1954 and didn't drive until 1971. First car was a 1973 "safety yellow" Ford Pinto - between that and my acne I couldn't get a date to save my life. Ah, but just look at me now! |

Had a 54 Ford in-line 6-cyl. 2-door tricked out about the same. Got a lot of chiding from the v-8 guys about a 6. They all wanted to drag race. I didn't want to, but finally relented. Beat 2 out of 2 till they let me alone.
What they didn't know and I didn't know was the 6 was the first year with overhead valves. It had phenomenal torque and could keep ahead of a V8 until about 70. Got bored with it, sold it to my dad with the agreement I could borrow it for dates. I got a Triumph Thunderbird 650 motorcycle. Much better as I'd had nothing but two wheels before. He did not like the stick shift and got rid of it for a brand new gold 57 Chevy coupe. I came out way ahead on that deal since I now had a great car for dates. . Al I never raced anyone but was always proud that I could "get second gear rubber".:p :D |
I never drove them, but my dad had a '49 Merc and a '55 Olds Super 88. Later he got a '65 442 that I did get a chance to drive when I was home from college.

Odd to see the word safety in any way connected to a Ford Pinto.

This is the first vehicle I remember "owning" as my own. It was a hand-me-down, though, so the paint was not nearly this nice.

My first car was a 63 Rambler Classic. Fill it up with oil and check the gas. At least the radio worked good. Then I bought a 65 Chevy Impala SS navy blue with silver/gray interior. Wish I still had that car.

327 Auto, Lavender color, Black Interior. Piece of junk it was. Transmission overhauled 3 times, brake failed on vacation in Arkansas coming off the highway at 70 mph. Wheel bearing went out on same trip. rear window panel completely rusted out. Sold it for $300 with 57,000 miles on it. |

Wow this brought back lots of memories! $56.95 was a hunk of "cash" in the 50's. |
I didn't "officially" drive until I was 16, in 1970. And then it was a '68 Camaro SS 396 with a Hurst 4-speed and an aftermarket 8-track player with a spring reverb unit that would make the most horrendous "clang" every time we hit a bump.
"Unofficially," I had been driving my grandparents' cars, pickup trucks and their tractor, out in the country, well before I turned 16. |
I was born in '58. My first set of wheels were a a 1959 pair of roller skates.
|
My favorite ride of the 50s was a Huffy Sportsman "English racer"... mine was red.

http://i56.tinypic.com/ndlagn.jpg By the way, did you know Massey Harris also made bicycles at one time? |
An toddler's walker then a tricycle. My first bicycle came in 1962, a J.C. Higgins 24" from Sears and Roebuck in Atlanta. I was born in 1956.
