Mostly I drove my parents up the wall. Come to think of it, I kept doing that through the 60s and most of the 70s. ;)
Stroller, walker and tricycle. I was born in '55 and got my drivers license in '71. My first car was a '61 Falcon and it was a POS. Mostly I rode my '70 Honda 175 Scrambler for those first few years of driving. |
my first car was a '67 Falcon. Not bad.. drove it from 1972 thru 1977

bicycle in the 50's....in '62 bought a '55 plymouth belvedere, black + white with red interior--wide white wall tires. 3 speed on steering column, 6 cyl engine.....didn't do too well on hills...had to get the speed up going down so I could make it up the next one. loved that car.....looked like this one

My first car was a 1965 Dodge Polara, 4 door, 225 cid leaning tower of power. Here I am proudly standing with it in 1971.

I had a hand-me-down almost worn-out '66 Mustang that looked like this when it was new. Not so good by the time I got to it!
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=189450Hated the white vinyl top, so I took that off (it was cracked and even uglier by that time) when I bought it. Hated those fake wire-wheel hubcaps, so those came off too. So it was kinda cool that it was a Mustang, but very un-cool since it was a 6-cyl. engine with a Cruise-O-Matic (3-speed) transmission. Anyway, that was my last American car purchase. After that I was on to a string of various Toyotas, and a '67 MG Midget. All kinds of fun! Rick / OCRR |

I got my first job out of HS and bought back from the dealer my brothers 50 chevy 2dr hardtop with Power Glide.
BTW my brother traded in that car with 98000 on it, and when I bought it back it had 48000 on it. I drove it for 6 months before going into the Navy and sold it for $35 less than I paid for it. |
After graduation i purchased a 1958 Ford Skyliner. The one that the top went into tohe trunk. The car was completely customised and all the chrome was removed from the side pannels and hood. The car had a Lincoln Contiential Kit on the rear bumper. Made the car look a city block long. With some Contiential Crusier Skirts on the rear wheel openings and the conti kit on the rear it was truly a " boat of of car" but as a teenager i thought it was just the best. I never have gotten completely over it!---------- Oh yea It was BLACK !

I had a 49 ford flathead in 59 and got a 1960 Studabaker Lark Convertible with bright red paint and a black top.

Anyone remember Port-a-Walls? I had 'em on some of my cars.:o

I got my license in 1969. I got my ride shortly after, 67 Goat convertible, 389 tri-power.
My GTO was the slowest car in our group. Surprizingly, among the fastest was my brother's 68 Merc Monterey with 390. That Merc, was faster than a 396 Chevelle, a 400 firebird, both a 428 Mustang and a 390 Mustang, Boss 302 Mustang, Plymouth Road Runner and GTX with a 440 six pack. The only cars in our little peer group that could take that car was a 454 camaro and a Plymouth Superbird. That family car Merc was just built to be fast!!! Go figure!!! |

:D It was 10 pm on a dark street in a residential neighborhood. Talk about pure dumb. There were about 20 guys all from my high-school and we had just finished working at a grocery store. As I hit 2nd I heard the squall of tires. When I got out of the car I remarked that the other guy sure left rubber. They all told me it was my car. It was all over school the next day. That afternoon I happened to be next to THE big V8 man of the high school at a light on the way home. I did much better that time. No rubber (costs time) and could easily see him in my rear view mirror. That was the end of my 'racing career. Sounds like one of those bad teeny-bopper movies. Al |
I turned 14 in 1956 and because I lived on a farm in Indiana I could drive a farm truck to the local feed mill then walk four blocks to school. Before that I drove a team of work horses and a John Deer tractor on our farm. When I turned 16 I got to drive mom's 1955 Ford Crown Victoria (two tone blue). I turned 18 in 1960 and bought my first car, a 1954 Chevy convertible (black with a white top). Loved that car. I don't have any pictures either.

I was born in December, 1946 - and started riding my bike when I was about 7 or 8. That would make it about mid-50s when I started riding my Schwinn. I would love to have that old bike back, if only I could find it!
Do you remember the heavy old fat-tired Schwinns, with that spring up front of the head tube? That thing weighed a ton, but I took her everywhere. |

So could I even on the 6. I discovered that in my first drag race. I hardly knew how to drive the car having just bought it a few weeks earlier.

I didn't drive until 1970 but had a few old cars including a 1947 Fleetmaster like this one.

In 11th grade I had a 47 Chevy fast back.
In 12th I had a 51 Ford hard top with a punched out 53 Merc flathead with centrifugal blower on top of it feeding an early quad. After graduation I got married and had kids. End of hot rods! |
53 Chevy 4 door, 3 on the tree, small inline six. First car. Went to the bone yard got a Chevy truck in line six engine, cut the floor to put in floor shift, painted it metal flake midnight blue, put vibra-sonic fader, 4 speakers, amp and under the dash record player 33 1/3 or 45s, blue lights under the dash, slicks on the back and to finish it off, a six pack. Top speed was over the 135 mph on the dash speedo. This was followed by two 57 Chevy's, 58 Chevy Belair(i wrecked it), 63 Dodge Polara, and a 65 Chevy White Bel Air, 327 with the biggest Holly 4 barrel, 4 speed Muncie with a Factory Hurst Shift( wrecked this one also). Mid 70's picked up a 69 Dodge Super Bee 383 magnum 4 speed (70mph 1st gear). No more as the kids started showing up. Oh ya had a 60 Austin-Healey Bug eye sprite in there some where.
|
John Deere B when I was 7, parents 36 Hudson at 12, their 47 Nash at 14, their 52 Nash, my 47 Plymouth 4 door sedan at 16, a 34 Ford coupe, a 46 Pontiac 6, and a 47 Dodge 4 door.
|
I didn't get a car till 1984. it was a 1963 VW Van with only 60,000 miles.
|
I'm in my 50's now, and I drive a 2008 Nissan Frontier pick up truck.
