Five years ago, I was a fat heart attack sitting on the couch, waiting to happen.
Am I now -5000 hard, honest miles later- a fit heart attack sitting on a bike, waiting to happen?
I don't know but guess which way I'd rather go?

All I know is I work with kids half my age who are awed by the 15 miles rides I consider to be "just staying loose".

I'm not buying that I'm any kind of role model for the kids today and I don't care to be. Live your own life, I say.
But if any choose to be inspired, that's OK too.

Almost everyone I ride/run/swim/play with is a grandparent. Their grand kids seem to hold them in the same light and as reverently as anyone else's grand kids. I think the notion that we're perceived as looking down on growing old by youngsters is wrong. Quite the contrary. I take care of myself, and I'm complemented and even respected by young folks because I do. That's an aspect, it's not the whole story.
Most of the people I ride with are also grandparents. Like me, several are also great grandparents.

My grandchildren are always complimenting me on my fitness. Several of their friends say they wish their grandparents were able to do the things I do with mine. I've taken them on several biking trips with me and they've loved it. Unfortunately they're now busy with college or starting families of their own and no longer take trips with me but I'm saving the bike trailer for those great grandchildren

Enthusiastic cheers from here. She
  • set a goal,
  • prepared,
  • persevered against adversity,
  • gave up when continuing would have been foolish,
  • lived on for further grand adventures.

Sooooo ... if one's limit is the point at which injury or worse may occur, and one shouldn't push beyond one's limits, that implies one should be able to know what one's limits are. How can you know that if you are uninjured? Or is it a simple mathematical function? That after 29 hours in the water "something, just watch out!" will go wrong? I don't believe one can know where one's limits UNTIL one finds them. I don't think that philosophy holds together.

As for being too old for endurance events: A good elder friend of mine once said, "As soon as you give yourself permission to grow old, you do."

Go, Diana!

Her website reported that she seemed to revive significantly after consuming blended chicken soup.
Works every time... I'm tellin' ya.

Not participating in the "Death Ride" and miss the view at the top of Ebbets Pass? Not here. I'm wearing that jersey in the avatar proudly.
I will continue to strive to accomplish, stop when my body tells me, push until it does. Keeping the doctors and drugs at bay through fitness is a worthy message to pass to generations behind. If they desire any additional wisdom, they best grab my wheel and start asking questions. I'll be happy to answer as we climb Grandfather Mountain...

Curses! Foiled again!

MIAMI - Endurance athlete Diana Nyad ended her swimming ultramarathon from Cuba to Florida on Sunday after medics warned another painful sting from a Portuguese Man o' War could be life threatening, Nyad team members said.

Something tells me she will keep trying until she makes it. Go Diana!

Maybe not where you live. https://locations.krispykreme.com/

Still very popular here, and one fundraising method I refuse to participate in, even when my son's HS band sells them.
