My First Century Today

Hey,
I'm soon to be 57 and I did my first Century ever, today. Someone told me that a Century is 2 halves, the first 80 miles and the last 20. Today, that statement became clear except for me it was more like 75 and 25. The 25 miles seemed to go on forever. I can see it is very easy to overestimate what you can do when doing a Century. The 75 mile portion was very easy while the 25 was gritty with the last 10 being pretty tough. I did finish though at what I felt was a good pace, 61/2 hours at 15.3 MPH. Lot's of rolling hills and some headwinds too plus climbing temps took a toll. I have been working towards this for a while and just wanted to tell somebody. Thanks.

Excellent. Now, when's number 2? That cooler Autumn air will sing its siren song to get you to do another.

Congratulations! A hundred Georgia miles in August might be about the same as 125 or 150 in October. <G>

Congratulations! I am working on getting my first century also. So far I have done a half century, and I struggled through the last 3 miles. 100 miles seems very distant on the horizon, but I am going to make it one day.

Congratulations. That's a great result for your first century. Was that your total time including stops or your moving time? My most recent century ride was out of Dublin on BRAG. My route was different, but the part between Laurens Hill and Goldsboro was the same. It must have been pretty hot out there today.

I'll add to that. Although many here have done them- look at the average cyclist and they will never do one.

It takes effort and courage to do that first one. After that they are easy. You know what they are about and the only problem is finding the time to do them.

So well done on completing the ride- well done on getting through the Bonk point and well done on not giving up.

You know what they are about now so when's the next one?

Congratulations.
I did my first one a couple of weeks ago. Now I know what all the little comments are about, like 80/20. I still haven't got that urge to do another.
When I told my brother he said "good, when we go camping you can pull the trailer."

I finished the whole thing including stops in about 7 hours. I took 3 breaks of roughly 10 minutes each. It did get hot the last 2 hours but thankfully, we had some cloud cover for the early portion of the ride and the temps stayed down and that is what really compelled me to do the Century. I had been planning on one when the weather got cooler but about 60 miles in I made a decision to just go for it. That is why my route is so haphazard. I wasn't going to take a chance on the heat so I decided to head back towards home in case I needed to bail because of the rising temps. I had to get creative to pile up the miles. I was literally ducking in and out of neighborhoods and backtracking just to add to my mileage. I felt great when I did finally get it done. I bet you ride a lot of hills in the Milledgeville area.
