I only wave back to the first hundred cyclists who wave at me. If I go past that number, I charge it to their karma. If you get a flat after waving to me, you'll know you're #101.

Not a peace sign. It is done with the two outer fingers and means "keep the rubber side down".

I get smiles from the ladies and I smile back but I'm not waving typically.

I wasn't calling it a peace sign...I was using it parenthetically to identify the two fingers being referenced.

I always give a wave wether riding or running. Some folks acknowledge the wave some don't. Let it slide. Peace!

Each of my rides has a purpose. Some are social, some are hard training, most are in-between and I am cordial but not very chatty.
On every ride, safety is more important than social. I like to chat but need to keep my situational awareness too.

I gotta tell you it's annoying to be going after a personal best on a training ride then have a faster rider pull alongside and want to chat, apparently oblivious to the clues that I am riding at my limits. To people I know, they should understand when I grunt out "Hi ..... trying ... best .... time" and then ignore them. Strangers will get a nod smile or wave but no verbal exchange.

I was riding the greenway today, passed a road bike rider, and happen to notice that he stretched his left hand fingers straight out while on the drops when we passed. That was his wave! Stupid me had never paid close enough attention to see if road riders were stretching their fingers out or not! Now I know.

Waved at a guy on a road bike yesterday. He waved back to the guy on the recumbent bike.

I live in a very rural area just outside St. Louis. What is weird is riding along in the middle of nowhere and meeting up with full-kit roadies who come up from the city to ride. You meet them on a deserted road and you wave and say hello and they don't even as much as recognize your presence. THAT is strange.
