The aero thing cuts both ways. I recently passed a 'bent rider going up a 1200' climb. I was moving because we had a substantial tailwind. He wasn't getting the same benefit. I told him he needed a sail.

I started riding road regularly at the beginning of this spring. I set my bike up with 100mm of drop and planned on developing my body and muscles to suit that position just like getting used to a racing saddle or retention-type pedals. I figured that if I ever wanted to ride hard I would end up there anyways.
I am happy to be able to spend a great deal of time on the drops at this point and feel that the up-front investment was worth it. I have found that the harder I turn the cranks the less weight my arms need to support and under the right conditions, I am "floating" over the bike.
Between the razor sharp handling, great sprinting ability and pretty decent overall speed it's hard to match the traditional racing position on a diamond frame. At 21 mph, I don't miss much taking a peek every 15 seconds or so when I get tired or am in a head wind. 'specially out in the country.

I loves a tailwind - typical recumbent seatback makes for a great sail. Not true for all 'bent seats or rider positions.

I look far enough forward to see what I need to see, if you are not, then you need to.
