As one of the flimsiest bones in the body, the clavicle is made to be broken. I did a double fracture of the left clavicle in 1976, in my one-and-only close encounter w/ a motor vehicle (left cross). I was in a butterfly compression strap for 3 weeks and back on the bike shortly thereafter. The only aftereffect is a pair of palpable bone calluses. On very rare occasions, these cause mild discomfort under the shoulder belt when I drive. It's too late to second-guess your orthopedist now, but it never hurts to challenge whether surgery is really necessary.
Best wishes for a rapid, thorough, and uneventful recovery.
