Exiles, twighlight, sunset, eerie by a glass darkly2008, on Flickr In color, this was not too good, but in black and white, it became much more dramatic. http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6057/6...666d7b5f_z.jpg Sudbury River by a glass darkly2008, on Flickr I took this on August 31, 2003. It was quite warm that day. This is the sudbury river in concord. Again, in color it was not that great, but in black and white, with some trial and error playing with the exposure, it got better. What I would do with the second image, go back to the original colour image, invert it, so that it looks like a negative, use a colour mixer tool, set the red at 100%, green at 50% and blue at 0%, then invert it back. This is effectively the same as a deep orange filter with B&W film at camera time, you would keep the details in the trees, which are a little blocked up, and still get the dramatic sky. If you don't have Photoshop, go download GIMP, allows the same tricks of the trade as Photoshop, but since it's free, does so for a lot less money:D |

OK, I didn't actually take this photo, but I contributed to her genetic make-up. |

Dudelsack -- I am so glad you and others are enjoying this thread. I have a digital camera -- a Nikon Coolpix P7000. It is a fairly small camera that I can easily take with me on my hikes and cycling trips, but has a lot of settings so I can control the outcome of my photos. I started out with a Nikon P300, a little point-and-shoot camera that took some great photos, but did not have the range of settings and options like the P7000. I do some enhancement with Photobucket. From my experience, it just takes a lot of shooting time. I shoot a lot of photos to get a couple that I am really happy with, but I love it and look at things in a very different way than I did before taking up photography. The more you see, the more you see.

Shot this in the yard a couple of years ago with a Canon A620 from about four feet away and zoomed in from ground level then let the auto settings in the camera do their thing. My wife and I met because of our common interest in photography; I'll likely have to temper my postings so as to not get carried away here.

Exactly. I would, however, like to know how you guys do it. Digital or film? Type of camera? Post-optical enhancement?

The good news: All of my old pics are now digital, and are backed up in half a dozen places. The bad news: The deterioration of the negative and slide stock was interesting: - Some were so grainy it was almost impossible to make out the pictures. A LOT of photoshopping (GIMP, Paint.net, ACDSee, and various other tools) helped me bring them back to the quality of a really bad but viewable picture. - Others were almost as clear as a modern-day digital image. - These had all been stored in the same container, in the same dark, cool, and dry location. - Some of the film that deteriorated badly was bought at the same time, from the same store, and were the same make and specifications, as others that had aged well. Weird. But in summary - I would urge you to scann all of your old pics ASAP. Or if you don't have the time to do it (and it's a very slow process), there are labs that will do it for you. Not as well, or with the care you would apply, but you'll save those memories. |
