I'm spoiled by having a few really good bike shops in my area. Well, my area is within a 60 mile radius. My town shop is small but very good and would find the right bike for any customer.

It's almost as tough as buying a car (well not quite).
You aren't all that far from Dana Point and there is a pretty good Performance Store there when a good friend of mine does a lot of his shopping. Just check in there and have her look at what they have. You have already seemed to settle for a 9 speed and you might get a bike with a bit of a Groupo upgrade: https://www.performancebike.com/bikes...8_20000_400309

As far as Tripple verses Double and compact double many of us have been at this long enough to remember when tripples were the new guys on the block. For many roadies the 52-53 x 39 is the standard. Now that Shimano, Campy and SRAM have 10 and even 11 gear cassettes the tripple has lost some of its shine. More than likely they will continue to offer tripples for a very long time. After all they still offer down tube shifters and bar ends. But for now they are still an option so you should be able to get one if you want. Some people are still dedicated to 8 speeds and even IGH bikes and some of us see than as old school. That is just what makes for different cyclists.

Will you be doing TDPS this year?

I have done it every year for the last 5 I guess. I look at it as a big bike party with 9500 people. Yes the Tour De Palm Springs is one of the ways I start my year for centuries. 10 to 15 of my friends go and we have dinner afterwards to tell stories. They changed the course a bit this year but I am still looking forward to it.

With an attitude like that, I hope she at least appreciates the burden you are taking on in being responsible for her. She is very lucky to have you around.
Look this is the way people buy cars... so why should it be any harder to buy a bike. People walk on to car lots with nothing more in their heads than I want stereo and red... and they are paying many times more for an auto. The consumer should not have to have the education of the "bike specialist" to get a bike.

Actually I think one Sunday we drove past but it was closed. Is it in an industrial park? Sortof on the end of a roll of small offices? I would never know it was there if the SO had not heard of it somewhere...
That's it. The father is about in his high 50's or low 60's. They both mountain bike race. I think the dad was in a bike accident and had to recover but the son still races. They know how to handle your request for a triple chain ring on a road bike.

You are much more trusting of car salesmen than I am.
