He had an impressive voice and was a very popular Russian performer and was himself amused that a clip of this 1976 performance brought him such worldwide popularity... he sang it this way as Soviet censors would not allow him to sing the actual words.
Sad that so few know of him as anything but "Mr. Trololo".
