I've met my mileage goal for 2012, even though I've only had one ride in the past two months. The time change and turning cold at the same time destroyed my motivation. Had to force myself to get in that last 26 mile ride to meet the goal. For 2013, I'm just going to have to suck it up and increase my mileage goal as well as establish a climbing goal.
2013 goal: 5,000 km (3,107 miles) 36,000 meters climbed (118,110 feet) This works out to: 417km/259mi per month or 96km/60mi per week for mileage and 3,000m/9843ft per month or 692m/2271ft per week climbing. As far as activities, nothing really specific, except to ride twice my age in miles and three times my age in kilometers on my birthday, (or within a week plus or minus that date). I'm skeptical if I can meet the climbing goal, but did 116k feet last year without really trying to do so. |
My goal for 2013: commuting to work on my bicycle. 100% bicycle commuting.
|
I only have just one goal for 2013 but it's a biggie.
I want to rediscover the enjoyable care-free feeling that I used to have. Frankly, since the accident in which I broke both my elbows, bicycling hasn't been very much fun for me. Since then I've spent a ton of money on new recumbent bikes and tried to get back into it, but I haven't been able to shake the anxiety and sense of impending doom. Breaking my hip in an accident on the Screamer recumbent tandem didn't help. I now feel like I've pretty well come to terms with the Rans Enduro Sport SWB recumbent and I have good feelings about the Kett-train tandem for riding with Mrs. Grouch. Come on nice weather! |

I often hear stories about RAGBRAI being a rolling party of drunks. That is nonsense - though there are always a few riders like that. However, if you leave very early in the morning you can avoid the crowds, avoid the worst of the heat, and avoid the drunks - and if you're so inclined, you'll be able to put in a pretty fast pace.

Try starting out at 5:00, 7:00, 9:00 and 11:00. You'll find yourself riding with 4 distinctly different groups of riders. It's not much of an accomplishment but I hold the distinction of having ridden on Wednesday of RAGBRAI I. |
Nothing ambitious here.

Turn 50 - so I can be in this group legally :)
Ride 50 miles on my 50th - hopefully more. 3 centuries Get a garmin - hopefully the 800's replacement -whatever that may be. |
Gabedad,
Welcome to 50+ anyway, wait now for the obligatory "Hey you kid, get off my grass" post and I'll ask what your choice of post ride Pie is now, post pictures of you and your bike too. Oh, schedule your colonoscopy as soon as possible. I believe that covers the usual orientation. Bill |

I just turned 50 in November, and I bought 2010 Gary Fisher Cronus to celebrate. This year I hope to:
1. Rebuild my daughters' mtn. bikes and start riding local park trails and greenways with them. 2. Assemble all the parts I've accumulated into functional bikes. 3. Start commuting to work. 4. Lose weight down to 180#. 5. Ride 3 mountain centuries on the Cronus. (I rode the Blue Ridge Brutal 76 mi. route in 2012.) 6. Ride more. 7. Ride faster. |
1. Enjoy cycling
2. Exercise 5 days a week, a combination of cycling and running 3. Qualify for the California Triple Crown jersey 4. Ride 5 centuries 5. Lose 10 lbs |
My goal as always is to beat the previous year, that should be easy this year, as last year was almost a total write off....
2012 Goal was to beat the 2118km posted in 2011, 2012 actual 132km total, just slightly missed that one :eek 2013 Goal becomes to beat 2012, that should be easy..... |
I've decided to use cycling and diet to drop 100 pounds this year. I even started a cheesy blog to document it at www.chubbyforlife.wordpress.com

Leastbest, I'm sure you have visited and post in the Clydesdales/Athena forum as well.

I've been those forums a few times. I'm a former Clydes(5'7" 251 lbs in Aug 2010 - 140 lbs now and have been sub 150 for more than a year.). They are a nice bunch of folks.
____________ ...and now back to the thread subject, 2013 goals. |

My 2013 goal is 5000 miles - calculating in the miles spent on the rollers for inclement weather from Jan-Mar... I go to the Dr next week to get clearance to start riding/roller-training again after the surgery to remove the scar tissue form my two previous abdominal surgeries (it sucks getting old!). I've got to hook up my new cyclometer this weekend... If you figure 500 miles of that will be in organized Centuries, that leaves an average of 90 miles/week. That should be easy enough...
