Since many schools don't want to question grammar and let the text abbreviations and slang terms be used it is going to spread. The proliferation and presence of computers, the internet and smart phones speeds this along, now. and Our language as do others evolves as time passes, whether we like it or not. The regular list of the most abused or misused words is too sort for my taste. One reason that Monica and I stopped teaching was the lack or spelling and grammar discipline in all classes. I remember being expected to correctly spell on each subject's test when I was in school, including college.

Back to abused words and terms, sorry for interrupting this thread.

Bill

You are all legends for coming up with those words and sayings. And there are definitely some superstars among us, who deserve to be legends, but haven't made it over the line yet.

You must be planning a career as a serial killer. I can't even remember the last time I had change counted back to me properly.

SERIOUSLY? REALLY? ARE YOU KIDDING?

think that will ever happen? Actually once in awhile you get someone who not only is polite and looks you in the eye but will hand you back coins and paper neatly stacked and count them out (and I can actually hear and understand them)... I am always taken aback and I alway make it a point to say how much I appreciate the effort.

What I want to know if you take away the cash register that do everything but make the hamburger, could the person make change?

One of my daughters works at Wendy's. The instructions for every sandwich is in pictures, not words, you don't need to know how to read or speak. A #4 is meat, this bun, these extras and then mustard and ketchup............ But considering the Fast Food work force, I understand.

Yes you realize english is the second language... being old and getting harder of hearing I hate pulling up to drive thru windows and not able to understand the person asking for my order. I try to be polite but I find myself saying "excuse me" over and over. I hate it. I just say my order and hope they figured it out... I can honestly say (guess where I went) I order a small green burrito and got 2 fish tacos... go figure...

You might be surprised to find how cashiers have their performance evaluated these days.
Did you ask if the customer found everything they were looking for?
Do you push an upsell option 100% of the time?
Do you successfully upsell a target percentage?
Did you ask if they have the company rewards card?
Did you ask if they want a company credit card?
Did you tell the customer how much they saved with their rewards card?
Did you mention the customer satisfaction survey on the sales receipt?

All while being timed.

In many retail outlets, cashiers will be terminated if they score low, particularly on upsells. Nobody in management gives a crap about how cashiers provide change.

This is a very entertaining discussion. I really cringe when I hear "cockpit" referring to a set of handlebars and a cycle computer. Talk about pretentious. As a pilot I'm glad the advertisers in my Flying and AOPA magazines don't refer to the "handlebars" or "saddle" of an airplane...

Quite an annoyance. We were taught (IN 3RD GRADE) the correct way to make change and hand it back to someone, including keeping all the bills "bankfaced".

A few years back, I went to a coffeehouse run by university students. To my dismay, the college student cashier could not figure out how to make my change. She tried a few times and failed, then I helped her. I felt even worse since this was my Alma mater and it is an agricultural/engineering land-grant university. No one goes there to major in anything but science.

I'm less concerned about our nearly illiterate nation than I am about our clearly innumerate nation.
