I think Biker395 got it spot on when he said, earlier in the thread,
Whether you realise it or not, many many of the threads in here consist of conversations between the same few long-standing posters. I have no doubt that they don't wish to be unfriendly, or to discourage others from participating. They may even want more company. But the fact remains that they set a particular tone with which they, obviously, are comfortable. And discordant opinions tend to ruffle feathers and give rise to defensive reactions as, for example, has been the case in this very thread. The impression is given, perhaps unintentionally, that some of the most frequent participants come here principally to talk to one another, rather than engage with a wider circle. We'll never know how many people are deterred from participating because of that impression, but from comments that are made here occasionally I think we can be sure they exist.
I am put in mind of Robert Burns.
Oh wad some Power the giftie gie us
To see ourselves as ithers see us

That said, I don't mind promising personally to be a bit mindful about disagreeing too assertively with someone I recognize to be new. That seems fair enough.

"To A Louse, On Seeing One on a Lady's Bonnet at Church"
And would some Power the small gift give us
To see ourselves as others see us!
It would from many a blunder free us,
And foolish notion:
What airs in dress and gait would leave us,
And even devotion!

If we are getting several complaints about off topic threads (people having to sort through them to find bike content) and you feel the moderators are moving too many of them, do you think that we should make this part of the forum its own separate entity? I mean a totally separate forum on its own, sort of like a senior forum? No challenging you, just trying to see other suggestions. I had mentioned to DnvrFox one time that if he should start his own forum, I bet it would be successful. But I think he took it in jest. I bet it's something I can suggest to the upper ups.

How would that be different from 50+? Suppose it was successful and developed it's own pub-like following. Eventually somebody would come in and say "Where's the bicycling content?" This forum is too cliquish." and we'll be back exactly where we are today.

I think of this as a place where most any cycling topic can be discussed AS LONG AS it is from the viewpoint of old geezers excuse me "fifty-plus cyclists".
So, how to clean a chain - doesn't qualify, a dirty chain doesn't get clean any differently if you're 20 or 60.
But, wheat and weight gain - heck yes, when we're older our bodies respond to foods and put on weight differently than when we were 20, or at least mine does.
That is what I would propose. Otherwise won't this just become a place to whine about lumbago, enlarged prostates, and how my 50+ jersey doesn't fit?

I find this thread fairly amusing. As a near 62 year old, I find more in common with the 41 Road forum than I do here despite having many 50+ health issues and riding a recumbent 75% of the time.
I do find the 50+ forum to be cliquish and over burdened with health issues unrelated to cycling, not to mention family problems, career problems and other drivel.
Then again, maybe I just don't want to reminded how old I am. Anyway, I rarely come to this forum any more and prefer the irreverence and adolescent humor of the 41.

What about this one? It feeds on crass consumerism, makes people want to buy a vehicle that pumps deadly pollutants into the air, cranks out huge clouds of CO2 that raise the earth's temperature and melts the ice caps and glaciers, drowns polar bears, makes snow storms obsolete....
....and these things are always driven by rednecks who try who run us off the road and throw beer cans at us. These are the enemy of all cyclists everywhere. How come a cycling site carries this anti environmental killer?

I do not ever think I will understand the thought in moving 50+ thread on wheat and fat to FOO. It could understand, even if I did not like it, if that thread had been moved to nutrition.
As an example, I certainly hope that the permanent banning of John Forester was a rouge Mod with no discussion on the part of other Mods or Admin. Seems to be the case, since that quickly got overturned.

Noted. I'll send this upstairs, thanks.

My comment was partially in jest, but there are some thread moves that I would have preferred to believe were a rouge Mod rather than a group consensus.

When a permanent banning is done, people are given a chance to appeal (heck the other places I mod don't do that ) Things are discussed between the member and admin, and as you see the appeal was considered. This is not the first. There are others in different parts of the forum where this has happened.

There, we just ensured you will see ten more of the adds.
There are a couple of solutions, that have even been discussed in 50+ without being moved (as well as other BF areas).
1. Pay to be a BF member.
2. Use a browser that can block adds.
Hope this post does not cause this thread to get moved.
PS - I think it is cool that Chevy is helping to pay for our BFs. Almost seems like the ultimate, in your face to them, encouraging more cyclist without them even realizing it.

If you see a topic about "Wheat" and you only want to talk about cycling, why would you read it? And especially why would you spend the effort to complain about it?
I would have to wonder about the motives of somebody who complained that a thread about wheat didn't have enough "bike content".

PS - that one occurred in A&S. I think it was even before the VC sub-forum.

I think most people are saying the forum is about topics that interest 50+ cyclists -- not just cycling at 50+.
