What can I say, t’was a river FUNS ride.
Cloudy and the lightest of showers.
Ride toward the light.

Cloudy skies. Isn’t that best for fishermen? And cyclists.

The end of my 81 mile ride around Seneca Lake. The wind and the humidity took their toll on me.

jppe 07-07-19 01:42 PM

Oh no!!!! I’ll be up there in a couple weeks doing the FANY ride starting in Plattsburgh. I was hoping for cooler temperatures and less humidity. Glad you survived.

I took these in Geneva a couple years ago riding across the US on Rt 20. Seneca Lake is in the background.

There’s some really good fishing where the pontoon is anchored. The main channel in the lake flows not too far from there. I’ve caught a lot of fish off the point.

Notice the jet ski?
Chilling at the in-laws lake house after today’s 88 miler watching the various water activities. It’s a really good day to be on the lake. It was pretty hot and humid out on the asphalt but I’m getting pretty well acclimated to it.

plasticweld 07-07-19 06:41 PM

The weather here has been humid only the last few days, supposes to be hot this week. I bet further north by Plattsburgh it will be nicer. I am sure it will be much cooler here than your home state.

I did this route around the lake, the real concern for me was the wineries, lots of drunks from all of the free tastings. What ride did you do when you were in Geneva a few years ago?

I was riding across the US following Rt 20. Florence, OR to Boston over 41 days of riding. Upstate NY was beautiful but the hilliest section I rode. There was 7000’ of climbing one day.

Wow a trip like the leaves me speechless. I am new to biking, I was injured this past winter and got into it to stay in shape until I can run again. That many days in the saddle says much, you have my respect and admiration for taking on the mission and completing. If you have a link to the story about the trip would you please share it with me...Bob

City crew repaired this bridge on the local rail trail. Gaps between boards were just perfect to snag 40mm tires. This pic is posed but the front tire got momentarily grabbed and it gave me jitters. Have ridden this bridge dozens of times and did not notice the new boards were installed like this.

I actually did a daily post on the 50+ forum for each days ride. I just did a search and unfortunately I didn’t see a way for all those posts to show up together. If I was smart I would have used the same title for each post???? After the ride I assembled all those posts and put it into a word document. If you’d like to read it I’d be happy to email it to you. You can message me your email address if you’d like.

Here is a link to posts from the first and last day

Your city crew must hate cyclists. That bridge is deadly.

zarbog 07-11-19 10:27 AM

Rode over it today, someone painted warnings on the rail trail dirt, Danger, cyclist beware. And the city posted a dismount sign at the bridge. Looks like that is going to be the fix for at least the rest of this year.

TimothyH 07-11-19 10:47 AM

Guilt the manager of Home Depot into donating some plywood.

A couple of guys with a pickup truck and some screw guns and and everyone wakes up one morning to find the bridge no longer has gaps.

Its an overnight miracle and nobody saw nothing. :innocent:

My favorite ride that’s not too far away.
North entrance to Mt Rainier NP. No great views of the mountain, no big visitors center. Just the Carbon River and trailheads. But the road getting there runs quietly thru the forest.

The old bridge, way above the steep valley.

My brother who lives up around there likes to joke about moss being the state flower. In fact as a homeowner it’s a real nuisance. Makes stairs and driveway quite slippery. Messes up the roof too. He has some kind of moss repellent he sprays on it.

Wildwood 07-14-19 11:07 PM

I used to live in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties - the moss would get you there, too. Felton in the Redwoods celebrates thick moss.

edit: UC Santa Cruz uses the banana slug as a mascot.

West portal of the St. Paul Pass Tunnel on the Route of the Hiawatha Trail. 1.66 miles long. Unlit except for the lights of riders coming towards you. Water dripping from the ceiling. Heading east you cross the border from ID into MT so you lose an hour. Then rode the NorPac Trail up to Lookout Pass and back into ID, so I got my hour back.

Forgot to mention that I started out the day riding the former Milwaukee Road right of way that is not part of the official trail from Avery, ID. The first tunnel I hit was No. 36. The first tunnel on the official trail is No. 29. As you can see, the St. Paul Pass Tunnel is No. 20. No. 23 is closed due to the collapse of the ceiling. (The Forest Service constructed a detour around it.) Still, that's a lot of tunnels. There are also 7 trestles along the trail. The highest is 230'. Neat ride if you are ever out that way. I went W to E, which means I was going up hill until somewhere in the St. Paul tunnel.

Wildwood 07-20-19 09:22 PM

When the temp is 60sF
When the road is new and smooth
When the route is thru a PNW National Forest
When the auto traffic is mysteriously absent

You will take it, eh!?!
