It was 17° and I rode a 13-14 MPH pace. The nozzles of both bottles froze within ten miles so less than an hour.

The bottle pictured was filled with Nuun and not touched until I got home after about 3.5 hours. I wrenched the top off, drank what liquid remained and the rest is in the photo.

Here is another shot of the tan llama for the ladies.

I rode my first century of the New Year on January 2 with a friend:

The weather was dry and sunny, with views so clear as they only are in the winter here near Tokyo. How many valleys and mountain ridges do you count in this view? :)

barely into the new year and nature decided that central Illinois should be reminded what winter is really like. A bit cold for biking, but made for some fun on the XC skis!

So hard seeing the warm weather pictures!

Great idea breaking out the ski's! I can start loving XC skiing again and the snow will go away.

Where does the road beyond the gate go?

It's a state park, climbs to a peak including some dirt for the hard core.

Closed because of the fires- some burned vegetation in the background.

We had just passed a number of burned homes.

From last years ride:

Lord have mercy.

A few years ago I took a group on a route which had some homes destroyed by a tornado the day before. We knew a tornado had hit but didn't know that it took out homes on our route. I remember the look on the homeowner's faces as if we had come to gawk.

I've passed two or three burned homes here in Georgia in the past two weeks, mostly out in yonder hills. People are using electric heaters and such because of the cold.

We did a bike tour in Germany in September and met up with two German couples riding the same route.

And saw this wrought iron artwork on the side of a house.

My favorite photo from yesterday. Make the most of each season.

rumrunn6 01-20-18 10:48 AM

that's a framer. Wifey says, "see, it's winter, go ski!"

steelbikeguy 01-20-18 01:06 PM

temperatures have moderated a bit, and the roads have been cleared (and heavily salted!). Not bad at all for cycling!

https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4764/2...a7eb60_c_d.jpg

shown here is Cedar Hills Drive, a 14% grade going down to the Illinois River flood plain. This is why I bought a triple crank. :)

My second highest max speed ever was on that hill back in the early 90s on a tandem. Something like 56 mph and change. One of the old club guys talks about it frequently.

Probably our second lowest speed ever on the tandem was the return trip back up.

With proper gearing, it's not too bad for me on an upright bike.. probably 4.5 or 5mph.

On the other hand, when I ride my heavy 'bent up that hill, the speed is around 3.5mph... ugh! Keeping it balanced at that speed takes my full attention too. I think there was at least one case where I had to get my feet on the ground quickly to avoid falling over. Starting the 'bent on a 14% grade is a lot of fun too. :)

Steve in Peoria, of course

I rode a 200 km brevet yesterday, from 6am to 6pm. It went around Miura peninsula south of Tokyo. It was mostly overcast, so no Mt Fuji views, but it was still nice.

Here is the view from the beach at Kamakura, which is very popular with surfers and windsurfers:

And this was an evening view, about an hour before I made it to the goal:
