FWIW, cortisone shots often include an anesthetic like lidocaine which provides instantaneous and miraculous cessation of pain and soreness, albeit temporary. For me the cortisone helped for a few days, but in the end surgery relieving an impingement did the trick. IMO, it's certainly worth trying, but I don't think it often resolves the issue, though it may kickstart the healing process with following rest.
I just got my first shot in my left shoulder today for degenerative arthritis. I will say that the motion is much easier and fluid, but the pain is much worse.. wont be doing that again.....

Hey eja_bottecchia: First off I know exactly what you are going through! I broke my Shoulder Clavicle, Scapula Five Ribs with Three Tears to the Rotator Cuff among other injuries in a Motorcycle wreck. I’ve been down from it the last 15 months.
A Good Sports Doctor is a great place to start! Get a Complete and Correct Diagnosis! My Doc treats Barry Bonds. Now that I think about it I’m not sure that’s a good thing!?? I recommend the shots they do work but as time has gone by I found the Trigger Point injections work much better for me! Physical Therapy is a must if you want to get back to things without re-injury and to get the proper movement and strength back!
Adjusting the Bike to Fit You to Relieve pain and prevent stress or injury is a Big Thing! I’ve gone to Ape Hanger style Bars on my Mountain Bike 14” Rise puts me in a Very Comfortable Riding Position taking stress off the shoulder and neck! Yeah I know, not that great for off roading but I’m on the Bike Damn it! Or as My Father says Damn it to Hell!
You have received a lot of sound advice from fellow Forum members looks like you just need to jump on the band wagon with some of it!

A torn rotator cuff will not heal on it's own, no matter how much therapy you do.
Thre is a good change the cortisone will help, but it won't heal it. It's a temporary solution to a long term problem.
I've had two surgeries for cuff repairs and currently have another tear which the doc says he can fix, but it's in the same area as the old ones, and will probably tear again given my activity level.

As I understand it, Cortisone tends, with too much use, to destroy tissue. I took a couple for my never-ending hip bursitis - they have to be about 3-4 months apart, but, really, it didn't help much.
What did help - a lot - was some prescribed PT exercises/stretching, which I do daily religiously. Being my hip, I emphasize stretching the IT Band and strengthening the hip flexors with things such as band walking. Shoulder exercises would, of course, be different. My wife has a bad shoulder area and does PT stuff.
My point? Get thee to a physical therapist.

This. I know someone who separated their shoulder last year. They had a couple of cortisone shots that provided temporary relief.
But what is really helping was the PT and faithfully doing the PT prescribed stretching and exercises at home. They are still not 100% but seeing steady improvement in pain, strength and range of motion.

Been there done that. About 3 years ago I got knocked over by a car comming out of a driveway. Very low speed accident. It hurt for a long time.
The way I got rid of it was exercise. I lay flat on my back and use hand weights. I lifted them up from the hip area, from above my head, and straigh up from the side. Hurt to do it at first, but the pain went away in about 3 weeks.

I've had such shots in my shoulders several times over the past 10 years (into the back of the shoulder didn't work for me. --had to go in from the top). My doc agrees that occasional (every few years) shots are an acceptable long term approach. The shots have worked great for me. Pain goes away and doesn't return until some other trauma irritates it (demo'ing a bathroom wall has re-irritated it on two different bathroom remodel projects). Sometimes my pain goes away on its own. When it won't, I get the shot.
