Considering the fact that you spoke to him several hours after the incident, I think you handled it with great class and maturity. Like others, if he happened not to have left the scene immediately, I would have been screaming at him, but in truth he (a) should not have been driving in his condition, and (b), he was indeed contrite.
Most importantly, I'm glad you're OK.
Best regards

Everyone at some time has a lapse of either judgement or attention, sometimes both.
I never chase people down to resolve an issue. If I can't do it on the spot, I don't bother. As mentioned above, do your best to avoid incidents through defensive cycling.

When somebody almost kills me, I WILL NOT be civil. And after hearing those circumstances, I would talk to his employer, and the police.

I'll buy that. I have since discovered that the eye surgery thing was a fabrication, and that many people believe that he is often impaired by other means. This is a rural environment, nearest police station 20 miles away, so its senseless to go give a report. He is just a part time resident with out of state plates, and would likely have an out of state license. Next time I'm riding and see a trooper doing speed surveillance , I might stop and tell the story and ask him to be attentive for the vehicle, but otherwise, I'm moving on. To those who feel that I shoulder some of the blame, well yeah!! I'm a pretty safe in general, but I got a little casual in a place I've been many times. Being in the right doesn't mean much when you're dead or injured. Thanks to all..........

Sounds like you are on top of this. Excellent. By Champlain are we talking VT and the lake?

Kindof............ I'm a long time Vermonter who made the move over to the NY side a few years back. Among the reasons was that the bicycling is so great over here (my incident aside). I'm looking at the lake out my window now. Thanks again.

My son went to UVM and I've spent a lot of time in Burlington. Also do a lot of motorcycling up there either island hopping via North Hero, Grand Isle, etc. But most likely to be found camping at Button Bay SP and hanging out in Vergennes. Used to ride the gaps over to Rochester to see a friend who had an independent motorcycle shop but he passed away about a year ago. Hoping to get my gf up there to do a little cycling this summer.
