Low Calorie - Electrolyte Replacement

I usually ride 20 miles every week night and longer on the weekends. Since I am trying to lose weight I don't want to drink sports drinks loaded with calories during my ride but, with the hotter temperatures I think even on my short 20 mile rides I am going to need something other than just plain water. So, is there some magic juice out there that I can drink that will quickly replace depleted electrolytes while I ride?

Thanks

I have been using "Cytomax" with favorable results. Tropical Fruit flavor is Okay.

I use Endurolytes tablets - 1 per bottle. Zero calories.

I use camelback elixir

I sometimes use Nuun tabs. It is a tab you drop in your water bottle. Other than that I use Heed.

^ Tried that (Elixir) and liked it. I like the effervescence.

I used to use ZippFizz that I got from Sam's Club. It worked really great but was around $18.00 for 20 tubes and only came in orange, grape and assorted fruit flavors (which was more expensive). I started using the Nuun tablets and they work just as good and my LBS has almost all of their flavors in stock. I have been trying several of the flavors and so far like the Lemon Tea the best. They are running me around $7.00 for 12 tablets. I've seen them advertised at other LBSs for a little less, but I would make it up in the drive to get them.

It's also sized for a 24 oz bottle that most water bottles are - not 16

Ultima.
http://ultimareplenisher.com/

Used the raspberry flavor for years until they came out with the grape flavor late last year. I have a glass every morning with breakfast (and one in the evening with dinner) whether I run or bike or even take the day off.

In the summer months, anything 60 minutes or over, bike or run, the Ultima is in my bottle. I've tried them all. The Ultima is simply the best- tasting and for hydration.

Whole Foods sells the stuff. You can buy it in small packets to check it out. Again, I wouldn't even consider another fluid replacement. Highest recommendation.

Because plants crave electrolytes?

Yea, my only gripe is that the 12 tablet container is more than I need for a typical day and takes up too much room in my seatbag.

Come to think of it, I may have found yet another use for all those old 35mm film containers I refused to get rid of. :thumb:

There are plenty of supplements for drinks and two problems with all of them. Do you like them? and do they like you?

I have found the one that suits me and I like the taste of so plenty of testing for you to find the one to use.

Weren't they aluminum canisters??? I think I still have a few in the attic. Orange with a red screw top? or was it a yellow screw top? That seems to ring a bell

BTW, I had a Praktica like this one in highschool. On the bottom of the lens mount it was stamped "Made in E Germany under USSR Occupation." Mine was something like this:

I got it for $30 and the best part was that it used the same Pentax screw-mount lenses like my dad's Asahi Pentax (non-us version of Honeywell Pentax) ESII

+1 on Endurolytes. They contain some B vitamins as well.

gabedad 06-27-13 07:44 PM

a lot of my film canisters were used for other means

SaltStick Caps.

I just drink Powerade Zero. A bottle of that and a bottle of water and I'm good to go.

StanSeven 06-28-13 06:05 AM

I don't worry about calories, especially on longer rides. I need something for fuel whether it's food or liquid. For 2-3 hour rides liquids seem to work well in hot weather. If I drink something with little or no calories, I start to feel and perform poor so I have to eat - same effect in I need some calories.

Nuun for me. Tried Gu tabs the other day, but they have an unpleasant (to me ) after taste.

FWIW I put a Profile Designs aero cage on the back of my seat post. Fits right under my tool bag and holds two water bottles to go with the ones on the frame. No sense wasting film canisters for no good reason. :)
