Re: Blueberries.FYI

Today after riding my bike out to one of the local blueberry farms and picking and retrieving 20 lbs of delicious blueberries I decided to make a sandwich. Got the bread out spread some peanut butter on it and then decided to use some of said blueberries in place of some grape jelly. Will be making more of the same.

My brother described "blueberry lemonade" the other day. Sounds delicious, and I was tempted to try to come up with a way of making that over the weekend.

I have a small blueberry patch here in central Florida (75 bushes both High Bush and Rabbit Eye), and while I personally hate peanut butter, blueberries make everything better. Blueberry pancakes, blueberry (and peach) cobbler, blueberries/oatmeal/bananas with Greek yogurt, and my personal favorite...just plain blueberries!

I don't have any place to pick blueberries so I buy them at Trader Joe's . . . still very good, but not as good as fresh picked I'd bet. I like them on my breakfast cereal and note they are esp. good on chocolate Cheerios!

Haven't tried it, but bacon goes with everything, so how can it go wrong?

According to ??NPR?? this last week, GEORGIA is now the #1 blueberry producing state. Just a factoid to make you seem smart - in like

Neighbor - "I just made some blueberry pie"

You - "Great - Did you know that GEORGIA is now the #1 blueberry producing state?"

[EDIT] - I better put a smiley in here before someone takes me seriously. - There!

That sounds good.

I am a peanut butter and bread fan, but I don't do jelly. I like the blueberries and I will have to try that.

I had to look up "quenoa"...never heard of it/them. I'll have to give it a try with my yogurt. As to my "crop" it is over for the year. Now the trimming, fertilizing, mulching with pine fine, etc. But it's worth it to watch the grandkids
pick and eat them.

Yes, a fresh blueberry compote on toast with bacon makes a great pre-ride sandwich.

"and now, he can't stop eating raspberries.

The man, who declined to have his name released, explained in a video produced by St. Michaels that "raspberries, to me, taste like the color blue. And it's that specific color blue, and if I see that specific color blue, I can taste raspberries."

You can grow them in pots if you don't have a lot of room. They must have an acid medium/soil to grow well. In Yankeetown we have lime rock, which has a high Ph, therefore I grow them directly in "pine fine" (finely ground pine bark with a very low Ph) piled about 15-18 inches high. The roots stay entirely in the pine fine and they drain very well so you don't get root rot. The plants we grow here were developed by the U of F and U of Ga specifically for warmer climates and require less cold exposure than the Yankee blueberries. I have a dedicated sprinkler system, and bird netting. The end result is very expensive blueberries, but it's a hobby and I like the idea of my grandchildren knowing that not all food comes from the grocery store. Probably too much information, but, for those in the south see:

I'm situated on the edge of the Boreal Forest, wild blueberries are plentiful here in sandy soil among Jack Pine. They are smaller than store bought, but much tastier. Should be in season in the next week or two- maybe take the mountain bike for a spin and pick a few.

just watch out for the black furry pickers. I hear they can be quite miserable about other pickers in their patch.

Way down south of your location, we call those (the wild variety) huckleberries. I like them better than blue berries.

We live in northern VA but a bridge friend of my wife does a yearly church drive blueberry buy. This year we bought 60# for a little over $42 for each 20# box. Great with muesli and yogurt (blueberry yogurt of course!).

Kind of like poking a bear with a stick. You know you are going to get the business end but just can't resist.
