This is interesting, what an amazing variance among people.
My SO and riding partner sweats a lot of salt. Me hardly any most times. One BP med (been doing musical chairs with those things) and my sweat was extremely (burn your eyes) salty... She also feels weird (nauseous, and weak) on long hot rides and craves salt, after some salty food, she returns to normal rapidly. To help with BP, I've started attending to both sodium (lower) and potassium (higher) intakes... Seems like the more potassium in diet the more salt I sweat... Do any of you notice any differences in salt needs based upon personal factors? |
For most mt bike rides, I fill the 100 oz bladder and carry 1 bottle of gatorade for a 2-4 hr ride. Very easy to rig up extra water bottles on any bike. Tri riders hang them from the back of the seat. You can also get one that fits into the headcap bolt. For the OP, just get a 1000 oz bladder. Also for hot rides, fill up the bladder with 3 trays of ice cubes, I get cold water for 3-4 hours.

With the 100 oz Camelback, if you freeze it it makes an uncomfortable lump on your spine, Ice cubes melt pretty fast and are ok unless it's a 4-6 hr ride.
What works great is freeze two 1/2 L bottled waters and slice off the plastic. shove both down into the bottom of the Camelback round end down, then fill the rest of the way. This forms a comfortable space for the spine and stays cold for 3-4 hrs and cool for six or more. I'll usually go with one L of Gatorade etc. and top it off with another pint-20 oz of water. That seems to be about the correct dilution for me. |
