Was using straps, '73, pulled up to a stop sign at a steep uphill angle, busy road, tried to not unclip, turned to the left to get a slight time frame to go but then had to stop, tried to unstrap, fell over to my left, long way down, hit and had a car bumper touching me, not a comfortable moment.
Actually thinking about a picture of a guy using hardboots to snowboard with clip in bindings, he had to urinate and was trying to get into the lodge to use the facilities, stuck binding, took off the boot and ran, anyway, take off the shoe.

Want to know a near-foolproof way to unclip with SPD-SL? Fall over.

They have never failed to release on their own, in my limited experience.

Only had trouble unclipping twice -- in both cases I lost a screw on a MTB cleat. I was lucky not to fall either time. In both cases I had to take my foot out of the shoe to fix it.

"Ever Need Help Unclipping?" this question is reason enough not to ride clipless anywhere but a race track.

My limited experience would counter this arguement

+1 on the WD-40 and checking for loose screws. Cheaper fix than replacing the pedal.
