Very True OldsCOOL, Environment is a huge factor. I just rode another century yesterday, so that's 20 so far in 2014.
I rode this one with two other guys, one 50+ and the other 60+. Well, except they didn't do the bonus Mt. Wilson Observatory climb at the end because they're smarter than I am! Plus, I needed it to get 100 miles with 10,000 feet of climbing, which was my goal for the day.

Bikes: Several bikes, Road, Mountain, Commute, etc.
Gearing is compact front (34 / 50) with an 11- 32 SRAM 10 speed Red cassette. The rear derailleur is a SRAM XX mountain bike mech. since this bike was built up a couple of years before they came out with their Apex line. Wheels are old Cane Creek Volos with Hutchinson Intensive tires.
Bob and Ken were both on carbon bikes so mine was definitely "retro" at least compared to theirs!

I do centuries, at times, as part of my self-supported tours. For me 100 is just a number because I may not even be aware of my mileage until the end of the day. I may ride anywhere from 35 to 120 miles on any given day depending on a multitude of factors. That said, telling someone that I rode 100 miles in a day does seem to captivate their imagination.

The bike was my old ('98) Titanium GT Edge with SRAM Force components (mostly).

You are correct OldsCOOL,
But honestly, I don't use the 32 in back very often. I spend a lot more time in the 28, which is the next one down.
The 32 only got used once on Saturday's century and that was on a very steep section (thankfully not long) on the Mt. Wilson Observatory climb.
I use it on the Mt. Baldy Ski Lift climb, which gains 2,000 feet in 4.6 miles (yikes!), Decker and Deer Creek (both off Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu) and on a street named Descending, in the Whittier Hills.

I'm in my late 60's and could do a relatively flat century, but flat rides are just killers. I'd rather do/attempt a hard 100K, maybe 6000' of climbing, then plant my rear in the saddle on flat terrain for 100 miles.
