Did not remain in an upright position.

Well, this last Saturday morning as I was finishing my ride home, I failed to remain on the bike. I was riding on the street and had to make a left turn to enter the bike path again. As I started the turn, I noticed my speed 16mph and I thought I am not going to make this turn as the curb loomed ahead. My next thought was, " This is going to hurt." It did. I did a one handed somersault over the bars and landed on my back. After I got m breath back, I took stock of the bike. I thought it would be really bad. The tire and front rim which I assumed would take the brunt were unscathed. The handle bars were a little off. I rode her home, albeit a lot slower. Went to urgent care and got a couple of xrays as the left arm which had bore my entire weight was pretty sore. Nothing broken. My pride appears to be the only casualty. This was a first for me in the 10 or so years I have been riding.

Bummer, at least it appears you have kept your sense of humor. Glad the damage was not worse.

Wheever 08-18-14 06:37 PM

Glad you weren't hurt!

OldTryGuy 08-18-14 07:00 PM

So glad the bike came through in pretty good shape, :thumb:, oh yeah, glad you're OK also.

+1 Bodies heal (up to a certain point), steel, aluminum, titanium, and CF ;) don't.

Take the pain relievers before bedtime.... your going to be sore in the morning. Glad the bike did OK too!

OldsCOOL 08-18-14 07:47 PM

Glad to hear of no broken bones, stitches or dislocations!

Zinger 08-18-14 07:51 PM

Relatively cheap way to test your bike's cornering limits. ;)

I don't even know mine :50:

Nothing that your LBS (Local Body Shop) can't fix :)

Glad to see you're ok. My wife did the same maneuver a few weeks ago at 8mph and landed on her side in mulch... Bicycles definitely do not handle as well as one may think...

Wileyrat 08-18-14 08:11 PM

Glad nothing bad happened. I have a history of bone headed moves, so I get it.

GeneO 08-18-14 08:59 PM

Are you trying to start a "Torgrot" backplant similar to a "Tombay" ? LOL. Glad to hear both you and the bike came out OK.

Insidious C. 08-18-14 11:59 PM

Yes, an upright riding position is generally the most comfortable. Glad you are okay.

Bikey Mikey 08-19-14 03:50 AM

Glad it was minor.

BlazingPedals 08-19-14 05:42 AM

This is the Internet. You did a Superman dismount, followed by a one-handed handspring and you stuck the landing. Good job! :D

qcpmsame 08-19-14 05:47 AM

Urggh, that could have been much worse. At least the bicycle was okay!:innocent: Really happy your weren't hurt worse, good job on sticking the landing, too (I'm sticking with BlazingPedals version!)

10 years since your last fall? I have had at least 2 falls this year, along with a couple of times I just missed a fall. I guess I need to be more careful. I have been noticing lately that I don't hold a line as well as others I ride with that have similar saddle time this year, so I wonder if part of the issue is my weight... I'll know if that is the case as the excess is shed away.

Glad you are doing pretty well... just to share what I remind myself of, keep the rubber side down!

wphamilton 08-19-14 07:35 AM

I am impressed with the 10 years accident-free, and also with the dismount on your first crash. It could have been much worse.

spdracr39 08-19-14 08:46 AM

Glad you weren't injured. Bikes are a lot tougher than they appear unless they land on the drivetrain. Remember when high speed cornering to sit up over the bike instead of leaning into the turn it will help cut sharper. Also if you emergency stop in a turn try to use primarily the rear brake so you don't compromise steering traction. Hopefully you won't have to remember any of this because you will be slowing for the turns :)

Oy, have I been there. Glad you came out of it with minimal damage.

berner 08-19-14 09:29 AM

Is it possible you gave up too soon on that turn?

Torgrot 08-20-14 07:10 AM

Thanks to all. I am recovering, my arm still being somewhat sore. Took the bike in to have it checked out. Other than some minor adjustments to the bars and cleaning and lubing the chain it appears that all is ok with it also. I will probably take to the trail again this weekend, trying to remember to not get to overconfident.

chasm54 08-20-14 08:12 AM

Just an observation. If you are "noticing your speed" - presumably on a computer display? - as you enter a turn, you aren't concentrating on what you're doing. If you were in the moment, just making the automatic adjustments to speed, lean etc. required to make the turn, your chances would be much better. Computer screens are a distraction, it's best not to look at them while doing anything remotely technical.

Ouch.

10 years well done, 7 months for me and I managed to break my hip. But my bike is ok :)
