Shimming

I'm moving from an old set of R220's to some R320's. Love the shoes but I can only get about 90% there. On both shoes really, but a bit more on the new ones, I feel more pressure on the ball of my foot & big toe. It often feels like the outside of my foot, 5th MT?, is barely touching the shoe. So that would be telling me to shim with the thick side away from the crank? Most of what I read says shimming this way is a very low percentage of riders (Steve Hogg among others). I have plenty of arch.

I'm going to try it out on a couple rides and see what I feel. Anyone else shimmed this way?
