Frame size epiphany
I just bought a new mountain bike. This bike did not come with a dropper post although higher spec versions of the same frame come with a 125. I bought the "women's" version for a larger discount, the only differences being a shorter stem, narrower bars, and a shorter nosed saddle. I'm nominally at the higher end of medium, but for various reasons not all good, most of my bikes are L with a short stem. This bike was going to start out that way so I chose a large again.
I've come to realize two things out of this. One is that I'm up against the lower limits of this frame. The other is that you can't cheat the size as much as you once did. With short stems and dropper posts, modern MTB's can't really be adjusted very far out of their range. This bike has a 35 stem - it's not getting any shorter. It's intended for use with a 125 dropper - that will be a tight fit if it works. I mail ordered this bike without a dropper. If I'd bought one similar in a LBS, with a dropper, they'd have seen almost no post showing between the collars, and guided me to the next size down.
