Raleigh Stowaway

Just purchased this for cheap last week, Raleigh Stowaway circa 1980, needed tyres etc but looked decent after i pumped them up and gave it a quick wipe, been in the bike shed today and spent 5 hrs cleaning, polishing and regreasing wheel hubs etc, fitted new tyres also, it will be lovely when done!

Bikes: Giant Excursion, Raleigh Sports, Raleigh R.S.W. Compact, Motobecane? and about 20 more! OMG

Sweet! First time I have seen that particular chain guard. I have an 80's model that has a more conventional hockey stick style guard.

Later version of it. Still a Twenty, just called a Stowaway. I have one, believe mine is a 1984, but mine has a chrome hockey stick style chain guard on it. Happens to be Ice Blue. Need to get some pictures of it.

My Bike has 80 stamped on the hub, it also has the 451 wheel size not the 405, it is also a folder, not sure of the rest of the differences as yet but i bought it to sell on, may have a buyer already, just needs a bit more polishing and cleaning and its good to go! Will post more pics when i have finished with its new tyres and all cleaned up!

After a few more hours of cleaning and greasing, its all finished apart from refitting the bag on the back and setting up the gears and brakes.

My stowaway also has Twenty on it. I think its just the name Raleigh use on the folding version.

The stowaway had 451 size wheels like the Dawes Kingpin, twentys had 405 size and non folding, still basically the same bike though!

There's one for sale near me. Ad sez 18" wheels. I know Raleigh did make an 18 incher.
It has the Stowaway decal. Looks like a 20 frame, maybe shorter fork, lower
stay spreader? Any ideas on what I should pay?

They had a smaller twenty called the Raleigh Eighteen so its probably one of those, in the UK they are not that sought after unless its some special U.S variant but over here you can get one around 20 pounds if its rough upto around 50 pounds, twentys dont make much more unless its really in mint shape like my bike above which i hope to get at least 100 pounds for!

US Market Twentys were all folders. The Stowaway name did not show up until the 1980's. Earliest Twenty folder I have seen in the US was 1967, most were sold prior to 1975.
