fitting a front derialleur on a Bike Friday

I am looking at an Bike Friday frame for sale on ebay. (ends in 3 hours so if anyone has input could they rush)

I cannot see how I would attach a front derailleur.
there doesn't seem to be a derailleur tab.

I have the same bike in a size larger, but mine has an internal Sachs 3x7 and so doesn't need an FD.
but they wheels shown with the frame (it comes with wheels and bars etc.) is not an internal hub and so would need an FD.

did Bike Fridays come specifically with or without derailleur tabs?
or am I missing something?

thanks
Peter

My Bike Friday from the 1990s came with no braze on for a front derailleur...It was a Bike Friday Metro..but it had the braze ons for the Sram dual drive..I had a local welder braze one on..I fitted a front derailleur and it has worked fine ever since.. ..So perhaps your bike is quite an old one..

That photo shows the bike frame quite different to mine..Looks like it has a braze on to operate a band on front derailleur already ..ie..cable stop and pull the derailleur from the bottom..

My Pocket Llama has a R'off hub , does not need a FD, either, but it has a Braze on fitting for one.

Being a Built to buyer's desires bike, you could specify.. (I have a refused BTO , some one else ordered)

I have disc brakes , it also has all the fittings for V brakes too..

Is that a Bantam type frame? for 'little people' ..?

No, that's apparently a full size frame. virtual 22" / 56cm . see attached.

I'm just confused about the mismatch between the non-internal hub wheels and the lack of the FD tab. (assuming the wheels were original, as the whole thing seems to have been stripped down from a complete build. which is fine, I have a million suitable parts and groupsets that I could build it back up with but I'm just confused.)

(I see marks that could be where a Band on FD was Mounted) , want to use a Braze on FD? Get an adapter that Band mounts On.

Did You get the bike ? Have you contacted Bike Friday company, in Eugene Oregon USA?

I did NOT get the bike. Dumb, Dumb, Dumb.
I've already got an Air Glide, which I purchased 20 years ago on a whim for my 40th birthday and that I have taken all over Europe and up all kinds of mountains since. Love it.

My brother, for whom this was intended, who (whom? whom I think) it fit, and who initially was keen, had emailed me to say "let it go. There'll be others". I think he was a bit put off by the starting price, $719. which even for a prestige traditional frame is well up there. (though the wheelset is worth $200 so that knocked it down to .... frame $519, wheels $200. very reasonable.....dumb dumb dumb.....)

Little does he know there will NOT likely be others. These don't come up that often as frames only.

Just before the sale ended (on ebay) the one early bid disappeared. Had been cancelled. so, 4m to close there wer zero bids. which made me think "maybe this is over priced? maybe I should wait and see if it is not relisted at so, $500 start."

and so I steeled myself, put on my disciplined buyer's mind set and.... let the clock tick down.
and Of course, 4secs before the end, someone dropped a bid bomb on and ... that was that. They took it for the opening price, $719.
Touche. well done.

Ahh well, lesson learned. now I'll just have to keep my eyes peeled for a 58cm Air Glide.
and then again, it wasn't for me. and my brother doesn't seem to care......

Oh but by the way, the seller wrote me back before the end of the sale clarifying that there is apparently an FD tab on this frame (even though I can't see it), that he had uninstalled a Dura Ace 7700 groupset and that the wheels were original. so FD-wise, it would have worked I think.

I am SOOO annoyed with myself.

Peter
