Guide to convert Dahon Curve d3 to d8 touring

This Topic is to Share how and why we convert our dahon curve d3 to a more capable touring bike. We always did bike touring trips in regular sized bikes but one thing always bother us in travels: the gaps between points of interest. to put it simple: if you are traveling in a lovely place, and the gap betweem this place and another lovely is a 200km in a major road? get a bus! full sized touring didnt allow that in most cases, so we opt for folders. we tried dahon mariner and dahon speed d8 in first aproach. it worker mostly well, but bikes are still bulky willy folded. the solution after some research, we figure out we can shrink wheel sizes more, to archive ultimate compactness. our primary choice was brompton, but here they are ridicule expensive new and we fi d an used one in a very bargain pprice. So, as no othe brompton was avaliable, we route to dahon curve d3. I find one used with worn out cables for u$$230,00. the preparation and seling stock parts as we already know, dahon parts like wheels are mostly crapp. so, the first things we changed were wheels. the bike came with sram p3 hub and a singlewall 28h rims. we sold these wheels for us$100,00. we place sturmey archer SRF8 hub with 36 doublewall rim in back and litepro 28h hub and 28h doublewall rim on front. i swapped also tyres, i hate big apples. we sold big apples for us$50,00. instead we used scwalbe marathon 1.75. There's a used Curve D3 for sale powered by a Sturmey-Archer S-RF3 gear hub whose OLD is supposed to be 127mm.
The Shimano Nexus 8 is 132,5mm, and I was wondering if it'd fit with just washers on both sides, or if there are other issues to be expected. Thank you. |
