Guide to convert Dahon Curve d3 to d8 touring
Fellows,
This Topic is to Share how and why we convert our dahon curve d3 to a more capable touring bike.
We always did bike touring trips in regular sized bikes but one thing always bother us in travels: the gaps between points of interest.
to put it simple: if you are traveling in a lovely place, and the gap betweem this place and another lovely is a 200km in a major road?
get a bus!
full sized touring didnt allow that in most cases, so we opt for folders.
we tried dahon mariner and dahon speed d8 in first aproach. it worker mostly well, but bikes are still bulky willy folded.
the solution
after some research, we figure out we can shrink wheel sizes more, to archive ultimate compactness.
our primary choice was brompton, but here they are ridicule expensive new and we fi d an used one in a very bargain pprice.
So, as no othe brompton was avaliable, we route to dahon curve d3. I find one used with worn out cables for u$$230,00.
the preparation and seling stock parts
as we already know, dahon parts like wheels are mostly crapp.
so, the first things we changed were wheels.
the bike came with sram p3 hub and a singlewall 28h rims.
we sold these wheels for us$100,00.
we place sturmey archer SRF8 hub with 36 doublewall rim in back and litepro 28h hub and 28h doublewall rim on front.
i swapped also tyres, i hate big apples.
we sold big apples for us$50,00.
instead we used scwalbe marathon 1.75.
The money
Here we gona put money balance, in us$ dollars
dahon curve d3: -230
sturmey archer hub srf x 8: -180
double wall rims -60
custom made stainless steel spokes 115mm x 66 : -50
new vbrakes alivio: -34
pair of schwalbe maraton tyres: -80
sellout sram spectro p3 back wheel and front wheel: +100
sellout swchwalbe big aplle tyre: +50
total cost: 396 + 100(labour) = 496
the problems and troubleshotting
This bike is not made to have panniers, so the rear panniers have an annoying problems of heel strike.
the solution was to buy thr tubus rack extender, with moves the rack 4cm back.

sibling names for tristan
front rack
dahon curve was chosen bike because it had front lug
dahon fromt lug to carry stuff is klickflix only compatible, witch is not comom here in brazil.
so we adapt brompton carrier block to fit dahon mounts.
this way i can carry 3 panniers.

Thanks! One can learn presumably from your experience no matter what folding bike one wants to adapt for the purpose.

Its not so simple, as the folding bikes models may differ a lot.
This guide works with dahon curve and many fisir spin and other copycat bikes.

There's a used Curve D3 for sale powered by a Sturmey-Archer S-RF3 gear hub whose OLD is supposed to be 127mm.
The Shimano Nexus 8 is 132,5mm, and I was wondering if it'd fit with just washers on both sides, or if there are other issues to be expected.
Thank you.
