Dahon Speed D7 Inquiry

As I am new to folding bikes (and biking in general,) I would like to know if anyone had suggestions as to whether or not the Dahon Speed D7 is a good starter folding bike? Is there anything I should know about it? Its primary use would be for commuting in an urban environment. Should I be hesitant about purchasing a used model? Additionally, what is a reasonable price for a used Speed D7? I have been reading about the bike as much as possible, but hearing from those with experience is always more informative. Any advice welcome!

I would primarily be using the bike in NYC.

I bought a used Dahon Speed 7 for my daughter about 2 years ago for $300 (I think?). It handles well and is good value for the money. But, as always, it really depends on your needs. I also have a Brompton, and if I'm going multi-modal and want to fold the bike while out and about, the Brompton is hands-down the easiest, fastest fold you can find. Dahon will fold, but it's gonna take you a few minutes to do it, instead of seconds with the Brommie, and it won't be as compact. Other thing I would say about the Dahon is if you intend to carry stuff on the rack, you'll have to search for some real small panniers. Here, too, the Brompton carrying options are superior -- but that all comes at a price.

I usually recommend a racktop bag for the rear racks on most 20" folders. For an example, see:

In the future I will definitely consider the Brompton, but I think for right now, the Dahon Speed D7 is more compatible with my budget. I have seen prices mentioned by others in different threads but they all seem to be somewhat outdated now. What is considered to be a reasonable price for a used Speed D7, made between 2008-11, being sold today?
