Two years ago, WB-A seemed almost dismissive that Brexit would cause Brompton any serious disruption.

Brexit is overrated. All this worrying is causing everyone to stagnate. I am an SME business; what matters to my business is launching new products. We’ve just seen an foreign exchange drop against the Japanese Yen by 25%, so who cares about a bit of import duty. For small businesses, these things come and go – it’s our job to deal with it.

He was sticking to that line in an interview two weeks ago in The Telegraph:

With Brexit on the horizon, Brompton stole some headlines in January when it admitted to stockpiling £1m of bike parts. But the 44-year-old refuses to get too emotional about it. “It’s by and large no different to foreign exchange movements. It’s no different to Trump deciding to put export duty on to bicycles. It’s something you manage; it’s not something you should focus on. What I should focus on is my staff, my efficiency of manufacture, the things that I control. I can’t rest my entire business on something that I am not in control of.

In addition to potential tariffs on importing bikes and e-bikes into the EU, Brompton could potentially face increased competition in the home market. "May you live in interesting times."
