Me, it would be the satisfaction of making my $13 derailleur leap tall buildings cogs in a single bound. But I recognize that if I go a lot larger than 30T, say 42T instead of 34T, to get me that heavy-touring-in-mountains low, I'll need that nifty Deore or other newfangled RD.

I'm jealous. I love mod'ing stuff, and I don't currently have access to so much as a workbench with a vice or drill, and it's really hard to move metal while just holding it in your hand.
Drill, dremel, file, sharpie to color in the exposed metal and to cover up a filing mistake.
Most RD's don't have enough metal higher up to make a new hole.

And that's the essence of learning. I'll bet he learned something from the mod. From what I gather (from I think one thread where you didn't even remember that you had acquired a particular bike, you've bought so many), your knowledge on this particular subject is *deep*. Takes a while for folks to catch up. I have both proposed designs where others didn't get it right away but eventually came around, to the reverse, others proposed something and it took a bit for me to understand the brilliance of it. Happens all the time. And that's a fun part of life. There are different paths to Rome. The best companies (and governments) are where there is free exchange of ideas, and mutual respect. Great things happen.
Eh, wanted to see if it would work. Well, it did. It wasn't the way I liked.
Came up with a solution, took a while until it mattered.
This bike is a backup, #3 or 4 on the priority.
Had some other mods and overhauls on other bikes that needed to be done first. So I did them.
And build a new computer.... also out of parts lying around.

I can buy a new bike no problem or all the parts I could possibly want. That's boring.
Make something that CAN'T be bought.
Don't compromise you vision.

It's not about the money...
It's about sending a message...

That's right. Anyone can grill a good steak. Cooking something great from lesser cuts, that's craft. The same for a hundred other things.

When I took poli sci in college, the prof was super great, he taught us about the *full* spectrum of political thought, then showed us that (at that time, early 1980s), the democrats and republicans in the USA were (holds his fingers about an inch apart) "that far apart" on the full political spectrum.

The ironic thing is, you and Ron, in terms of philosophy about bikes, are about that same amount apart; You both seek to build up bikes that are bargains in terms of capability versus cost, and unique. Enjoyment in that challenge. Me too.

By saying I'm wrong, you've proven me correct. And I don't mean about bikes.
  • Bele : It is obvious to the most simpleminded that Lokai is of an inferior breed.

Mr. Spock : The obvious visual evidence, Commissioner, is that he is of the same breed as yourself.

Bele : Are you blind, Commander Spock? Well, look at me. Look at me!

Captain James T. Kirk : You are black on one side and white on the other.

Bele : I am black on the right side!

Captain James T. Kirk : I fail to see the significant difference.

Bele : Lokai is white on the right side. All of his people are white on the right side.

Update....
I had a similar derailleur collecting dust so I decided to shorten it even shorter to see if I could get more clearance, Clarence.
And now I have 2.5" ground clearance (on gears 3 and 4) or just above the rim.
Now I can have a full flat and no pulley touchie!

I could post pics but it's just like the last one but... ya know.. more.

Might go for another 1/4" with a different idea but at this point it's not needed, it's just to see if I can.

455% gear range... not bad....

When someone one-ups me? Whom exactly? You and your asinine, amateurish hacks? Your circuitous, cockamamie solutions to a problem with a simpler, straightforward solution? Oh yeah, you really one-upped me there, champ, a real spanking. You taught me a real lesson. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Ya know when you've one-up'd someone when they're super triggered and throw a Full Blown Temper Tantrum....
Poor thing just HAS to have the last word.
I like the part where you respond to own lonely thread because no one else will.

.... and who hell says "cockamamie"?

ok "sport"!
You win this round!
Here's your prize!

"Super triggered", "Full Blown Temper Tantrum", yeah...ok, bro. You keep telling yourself that.

I start and update some threads as repositories, for record keeping and for myself, not necessarily for others. I can give a rat's @zz whether people comment. In fact, as most people here can't get a lot of my stuff or turn up their exalted First-World noses at my "Asiatic garbage" gear, or are enamored with, captives of the likes of BF, Brompton, Birdy and Moulton, Dahon, etc., I actually don't expect people to respond. No skin off my back. I do things for myself and for my own pleasure, not for others. Wake up, man.

Who uses the likes of the word "cockamamie"? People with good education, wide ranging diction and a handle of informal Americanisms. Who questions and mocks good diction? People with poor education and limited diction. When a person resorts to questioning diction, you know that person's got nothing in the way of an argument or rebuttal. It's a give-away. That's you.

I'm sure that's what it is....

I always wondered what a Bike Incel would look like.
