I have been working on the problem with the brakes. One can change the path of the brake lines to reduce bends and shorten the overall length. I found some long reach tektro single arm calipers that fit onto a Merc so that the brake line heads directly up. Just to fully explain, the brake lines on the stock bikes loop towards the ground before heading up to the handlebars.

These simple changes make a big difference in stopping power.
