(someone should rename this thread to the "bargain" thread so it officially includes ebay, craigslist, sales, etc) |

Mobiky Genius Santa Cruz
I arranged with the owner to buy the bike; received a request for payment via PayPal. Got nervous - turns out PayPal doesn't have buyer's protection for this type of transaction. Anyone have experience buying expensive bikes on Craigslist using Paypal, and any tips to ensure it's legit?
Thanks. DL |

BTW this is for the Mobiky Genius, great price.

It's hard to say. You really have to feel out the other person a bit. If you don't like taking risks, and it's a lot of money, it might not be worthwhile to you.
I recently bought a Bike Friday Tikit that was listed on craigslist in Oregon. I live in Illinois. I paid via Paypal. Yes, I felt a little nervous about it, but the seller made me feel somewhat comfortable... and I asked a number of questions to boot. It certainly helps if you're somewhat geographically close to the seller. If not, you have to make a gut check and see if you're willing to take on the risk. I'm not saying it's a complete gamble, but I don't want to tell you to go for it and then later find out this was one of the bad eggs on craigslist. --sam |

Thanks. DL Don't believe the marketing that you have to worry about fraudulent credit card transactions. The credit card companies just want you to think that because they know they're taking a huge risk putting their money on the line like they do. Your money remains safely in your bank account until you receive the goods and the credit card bill arrives. It's the credit card company that's at risk of getting ripped off and that's a risk they are willing to take because of all the profit they can make from people who can't control their spending. |

http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/bik/830569947.html I bought that one :p but not for $250; there was a bit of a bidding war. Anyway, great deal! |
Anyone order a bike from the UK of Europe. It looks like they have more folding bike styles than the US and more affordable. The Viking SAFARI 6 is £159 = $280 on amazon.co.uk. I just don't want to end up in paying $300 for a bike and $300 in import and tax fees. Any ideas.

Thanks for the advice!
Good to know the point about using a credit card, I will feel more confident about buying through craigslist next time! After back and forth re. my nerves, the Mobiky guy is willing to ship me the bike BEFORE I pay him, so obviously he's a good guy. Haven't received it yet. Great deal on a Mobiky!

Hi Lalato:
Heck - I'm from San Jose but even I hate to see someone refer to San Francisco as "Frisco". |

New Dahon Dream 6 speed 16" on Ebay $320. It is shipping from China, so I wondered if it might be a clone, but I searched and found people selling them in East Asia on bulletin boards. It might still be a clone, but at least the Dream is the name of a real model sold in Asia.
