Folds Up! Folding bicycle tour, NYC

Forget the 5-Boro Tour, this is the real thing. 5/12/07. https://times-up.org/index.php?page=folds-up-ride. See you there.

Sorry I missed the post on the 5 boro thread! It's tough to search this forum.

Anyway, there is also a folding bike race at 1PM.

Am I going to get a ticket if I show up without a bell on my bike?

Although these guys do require a helmet on all their 5BBC rides, I don't think they necessarily require the bell (the bell, lights and refelctive gear are required by NYC). So unless someone takes special notice, you should be OK. Would it be a problem to get the necessary items, just in case?

In NYC? Ha ha ha! I shouldn't curse myself, but I've never seen anyone get ticketed for running a red light. In fact, I ran one yesterday next to a cop on horse (also running the light).

Sanctioned tour leaders will require you to wear a helmet, though.

Yeah, but I've heard stories about cops cracking down at critical mass rides. So I wasn't sure if they would be doing the same here.

I'd like to take my Carryme, but I don't own a bell and I don't even know if I can fit reflectors to the 8" wheels on my Carryme:
Section 1236. Lamps and other equipment on bicycles.
(b) No person shall operate a bicycle unless it is equipped with a bell or other device capable of giving a signal audible for a distance of at least one hundred feet, except that a bicycle shall not be equipped with nor shall any person use upon a bicycle any siren or whistle.
(d) Every new bicycle shall be equipped with reflective tires or, alternately a reflex reflector mounted on the spokes of each wheel, said tires and reflectors to be of types approved by the commissioner. The reflex reflector mounted on the front wheel shall be colorless or amber, and the reflex reflector mounted on the rear wheel shall be colorless or red.

Just took my reflectors off

Based on this, and some more Google searching of New York State laws, I removed my front & rear reflectors because I have reflective Schwalbe Marathon tires. Also I always, even in daytime, ride with lights (Serfas SL-200 in front, and a Blackburn Mars 2.0 or 3.0 (I have both) in rear).

Only saved 2.7 oz, but they're ugly little pieces, easy to remove.

Note: I'm not a lawyer, don't construe this as legal advice.

Oh, and I highly recommend a bell. A very unobtrusive way to let pedestrians (of which there are many in NYC) know that you're coming. I recommend Mirrycycle Incredibels. Clever Lever is a good one for Brompton because the lever is 360 degree adjustible. Cheap too. I've also used the Original.

Does anyone in NY use air horns as a pedestrian/car early warning system...(before the scream)?

Will there be booths from most of the folding representatives, ie. Brompton / Dahon / Swift / Bike Friday? Didn't see that info on the site.

Anyone know of other national events that might have similar?

Sometimes you will come across someone using a Air Zounds air horn. It's one of those manually rechargable suckers. They are quite loud, enough to get you to swivel your head from a block away.
