I have a surly 1 x 1, and a dahon jack(which now belongs to my mother). I have never replaced the stock fork on the jack with a 1 x 1 fork.

I'm considering the Cadenza (actually, I've already ordered it, but can cancel), but this discussion has interested me in the Swift instead. I am brand new to folding bikes. Haven't ridden in years. I commuted in grad school nearly 30 years ago on a light weight 700c road bike and loved it.

I take a month or two off every year to fart around in BC on a 36' sailboat and want something to get around on in the islands. I'm usually at anchor, so I anticipate putting the bike in an inflatable dinghy to get to shore. Light weight and compact stow size are very important, but riding ease is important as well. I've never done the mountain bike thing because I assumed I would be very disappointed in the increased effort of peddling, having been used to a true road bike.

So... I thought the Cadenza with its nearly full size wheels would be the thing. But this discussion has me leaning toward the Swift. If it is just as easy to push and is more compact and sets up easier AND has better overall quality, than it's a natural.

Please advise.

The Swift doesn't have a very small folded size, from what I gathered here. How important is the folded size to you?

Not too important. The Cadenza is 15.4" x 31.9" x 37" and 27 lbs. Not too big to fit in a dinghy or stow aboard. The Swift is packs smaller doesn't it? I understand the Swift sets up easier, once I get it ashore, so the next question is whether one gets me down the road 10 to 20 miles for supplies more easily than the other.

I like the Cadenza (Cadenza 8 to be exact) for a more traditional look and bigger wheel (better ride quality?). Fold size is not too important to me too. Too bad for me, I'm just too broke to afford one.

Another question is "how do you plan to carry your supplies?" 20 miles one way is not insignificant if you're carrying a lot of stuff. And still a further question, "how ratty are your roads?"

Most of these supply trips will be 1 to 3 miles for a block of ice and a few groceries. I figger a backpack will do for that. 20 miles is likely the longest and prob'ly just sightseeing. Roads are paved and generally in good condition.

i test drove the dahon cadenza and liked it, i'm surprised that you found the swift to be a better ride. i'm instrested in knowing if you have ever rode the montague swiss bikes the lx, hummer lx or paratrooper.

i'm interested in getting a folding bike and want a good ride and portability. I definitely will consider the swift after your post. Do you know much about the company or bike to make me feel more comfortable because i've never heard of it before and would like to get something soon.

any suggestions or ideas would be welcomed.

i'm primarily going to use the bike in nyc and transport it on the lirr. I'd prefer a full sized bike and one that can be folded without too much trouble.
