IslandHopper 09-14-09 12:16 PM

It seems to Brompton - Moulton Hybrid !

Found some more pictures of it here and it says Steve Parry made it

Nice, its appears to be a mixture of older Moulton MIni(?), with a (SP Brompton)folding stem, a custom bespoke folding coupling (taken from a Brompton?).

I like the rear moulton suspension, and particular the seat post extension on the frame. That reduces the stress and stiffens the ride up , potentially get rid of this difficult folding bike problem. Should he have keep the front suspension, rather than used a suspended stem?

Humorous question. In 47 years of manufacture, Moultons has never made a folding bicycle. Some models are separable.

Best,

While Steve is best known for his work with Bromptons, he has worked on Moultons and IIRC Birdys as well.
The bike looks neat and it is good to see that he chose to use Brompton hinges rather than something nasty like those fitted to d****s

stevegor 09-14-09 09:39 PM

I desperately need/want/ just gotta have a Moulton.......(sigh)...one day.

The later Moulton Minis & Midis did not have the front suspension, it was a cost cutting ploy by Raleigh and is reputed to have angered Alex Moulton intensely. These bikes also came with a reduced frame size and 14'' wheels, to make the overall configuration better for ladies and people of small stature. Did you notice if this conversion had kept the original wheel size or if it had been increased to the more common 16". I would imagine a 14" folder would give you a nice package size.

PDR 09-15-09 03:16 AM

I think the answer to that is they are 16”(or even 17"). The clue is in the tyres.... Schwalbe Kojaks don’t come in a 14” size. Kojaks come in 16, 17, & 20 inch sizes.

I am sure Steven Perry could make em!

I doubt its a standard mini Mouton fork, anyway if SP got his hands on it. Its has braze ons for V's for a start.

I read somewhere on a Moulton website that when Raleigh took over production of Moulton bikes they dropped the suspension fork on a certain model and replaced it with a rigid one. Alex Moulton was not happy about that and warned them it would cause the frame to crack near the head stem, and guess what.....it did.
Raleigh's answer to fix the problem? They made an ugly bolt-on sleeve that covered the problem....out of sight, out of mind?

Sammyboy 09-15-09 02:13 PM

This reminds me that I've got to get on with my Moulton Mini project....

Ok, I won’t mention d****n again. I’ll just refer to the clamps as those fitted to certain mass-produced Taiwanese bikes from now on ;)

LittlePixel 09-16-09 07:11 AM

Love it. Seems the forks are lending a few Brompton pattern fixings too. Folding seatpost a la Tikit too. (well without the cable releases). Great update on classic.

i looked this up its very interesting...Dr. Moulton told them this frames would crack without the front suspension.... heres their "fix" http://www.moultoneers.info/assets/i...nd-krutch-jpg/

i still think this project is super cool, i wonder what the old man said when he saw it...maybe he got scared:D im joking no diss ment to Dr. Moulton...

im enjoying his work!

the folder just needs a birdy suspension...and it would ROCK! lol

stevegor 09-17-09 05:52 AM

That's the one, I wonder how many irate Raleigh Moulton owners accepted this bodgey excuse of a repair?

In those days Raleigh made bicycles of the highest quality, including TDF team bikes, they also made total barges....RSW16

Diode100 09-17-09 06:02 AM

To be fair, I had a 3 speed midi only a couple of years back, it had no front suspension, no auxillary clamp, and was fine ,with no frame problems, even after 30+ years.

griftereck 09-18-09 02:26 AM

I had a Mini. Didnt have that horrible clamp.
Why didnt Raleigh just weld on a bracing tube like a Dawes Kingpin has. I geuss that the clamp would be easy for the shops to put on. Hope they didnt put it on cracked frames though.

Because Raleigh could make decent bikes ,but often opted for laziness.

It reminds me if some of the terrible engineering by Raleigh. I helped some user testing of the Raleigh Burner BMX(1990's) with stickers over the Raleigh name to conceal its idenitiy. All of the bike were handled back with several broken parts on them after only a weeks trail, by mild mannered racers, not stunt riders. Problems included alloy bars that were dangerously weak, and the frame Downtube was flattened then welded underneath the bottom bracket, instead of meeting it as a full tube. Despite the results of this testing, the same bikes went into production unchanged! I remember a nextdoor neigbour asking me "aren't the new Raliegh BMX range great!", he worked at Raleigh, and he did not seem to like my race quality imported BMX bike. Ignorance is bliss!

Great memories, and the factories was in my home town of Nottingham, but not every thing from Raleigh was great!

I have to say the build quality of my R20 is less than stellar...
That bracket is one for the history books along side the staggered rear wheels
of Le Car (they forgot to figure in enough room for the muffler)
