Bikes: Giant Excursion, Raleigh Sports, Raleigh R.S.W. Compact, Motobecane? and about 20 more! OMG

Speaking of Twenty's and longer rides. There were two of us at the 2009 ABCE in Minneapolis/St. Pauls a few weeks ago.

We did a ~40 mile ramble around the Twin Cities. One Twenty is my mildly modified one, the other was a pretty much OEM shaggy dog. It was a 1968 model and had painted fenders vs the chrome ones that they used later.

There were a couple of other Twenty's there but they weren't ridden on the longer ride. One was a coffee brown 1974 that was up for sale and the other a fixed frame "Shopper" with the 451 wheels.

That's what I'm afraid of.
There's one in decent shape, in my local CL for $120 last week.....I passed (with a great deal of hesitation). Maybe someday.

The Twenty will see it's first century... I am presently building up a new wheelset for it as my swanky new front wheel went on my daughter's 20 inch Saffron and I have been wanting to build a new rear wheel for some time.

]May go with 451's for better performance and mebbe a new S3X hub to make it a 3 speed fixed... Sheldon Brown would have loved to see this new hub that many wanted to be named after him.

I have 3 R20 non folders, my wife's bike is Magenta with subtle mods like Velocity 451 rims, Stelvios and SA 8 spd hub, and Avid brake levers. My black R20 was modded with Velocity 451 wheels, but I've changed them for 406s with the SS hub. This bike is waiting for a conversion back to 451 with a Sachs 3x7 hub. The third bike is in pieces and will take the 406 rims and hopefully a 58/48 front and 7 spd rear.

IMHO, the 451 size are fast and handle better, but the 406 with Conti slicks are not far behind.

Speaking of Twenty's and longer rides, I used mine on the 3 Speed Tour of Lake Pepin this spring. For me, 50 miles followed by another 35 the next day is just as epic as back to back centuries were 30 years ago.

For better braking I replaced the rims with Rhyno Lites, added braze-ons for Shimano cantilevers to my fork and made a drop plate for a shorter reach, beefier sidepull on the rear. I have a spare fork so I can always make it original if needed.

Designed for a 451, there is an abundance of clearance under the rear fender, even with a 1.95" tire, as shown in this earlier photo.

The small screw is to support the rear fender.

As you can see, the new brake pivot bolt sits about 22mm closer to the rim than before.

Two 5mm hex bolts do double duty securing both the Pletcher and the top of the drop plate.

Bikes: See my sig...

Here is the most heavily modified 20 I ever built up...

"Grace"

Re-threaded the bb to standard and fitted a Shimano 600 crank, built / bought alloy wheels, replaced the stock fork with a suspension model and installed a real headset, added a drop bolt to the rear (not shown), added a Nitto technomic stem , drop bars and v-brake compatible levers... and then added a rear rack so she could do some commuting and errands.

Sold her to a friend... he loves her.

With the three speed and nearly full on road gearing she is pretty fast and eats up bad roads like they aren't even there... the v-brake up front addressed the poor braking issue.
