Moulton TSR make-over
 

I was going to go ride yesterday morning. But it was dreary, overcast and I just didn't feel like going out.

So, I stayed in the garage and tinkered. This is what I did -

Changed the Moulton TSR to more of a touring bike, which befits its nature. Changed the drivetrain from Campagnolo Veloce 10speed to Shimano Ultegra and Capreo gears. Put on sexy FSA carbon cranks. Most importantly, I swapped the drop bars for moustache bars. This allows me to up a little for cruising around, yet I can still get down lower for going into the wind or going faster.

I must say, I like the looks too :love:/

Actually, I was reading today about the Shimano Di2 electronic shifters and F/D & R/D. Costs about the same as my house. I nominate Mr Crunch's admirable scoot for it.

SesameCrunch, is this the Moulton day bag that you have below the seat? How do do like it?

I have the full size rack but it is a hassle to put it on and off so I am thinking switching to using the day bag and leaving the small tray on all the time.

Another option is using one of those under the saddle bags like this one http://www.wallbike.com/carradice/zippedroll.html (currently I use an under the seat wedge but it is too small for some rides).

BTW, I like the color of your bike and the leather color of the handle bar grip complements it nicely

Yes, it's the Moulton day bag and day rack. I like it for carrying tools and clothing for day rides. I like the looks a lot too. Very distinctive. I got it through Bruce.

I love the color combo. That's the main reason I'm sticking with the heavy Brooks saddle. It looks too nice to take off.

I would highly recommend this handlebar setup for you. The ride position is very comfortable when I'm holding the end of the moustache bars (more like a cruiser). Then, I can get down low in the forward hand position for when I'm riding into the wind or something. You should come over again. We can do a ride together and you can try this configuration!

If I went out to the garage and made modifications of that monetary amount to my bikes, I'd be banned from the garage for life, the bikes would likely be donated to the Salvation Army and cycling would become my former hobby!

That is a nice bike.

The only problem I see is that you are near the end of the "folder progression". Will a Cat Trike be next, or maybe a Harley?

Heh, heh. I actually didn't spend any (new) money on this configuration change. The parts were from my Dahon SmoothHound roadie, which I am officially retiring (I got tired of riding the M size frame, which is a bit too small for me.)

Of course, I need a road bike to replace the Dahon, so I got a full size frame (off Craigslist) and am building that up to be my backup/training roadie bike.

Boy, you are very perceptive. I am starting to feel satiated with my folder hobby. I love my current collection - it's interesting, diverse, has some classics... Is it possible that there could be an end to folderitis? We shall see, we shall see.

Those are arum lilies; they do that whenever a Moulton is near. I have a stand of these next to my driveway and I have to be very careful to steer wide of them or they fall over.

Quite so! Arum lilies (we yanks call them calla lilies) don't "fall over" they prostrate themselves before greatness.

Got my day bag from Bruce on Friday and took it for a test ride today. I put in my regular undrseat wedge which has the regular must have stuff (patch kit, tools, etc) and still had plenty of room for camera, food, etc. I can also place the bike in the trunk of my car without having to remove the rack which is very nice.

One down side is that I cannot use it with my temporary rear fender http://ecom1.planetbike.com/7000.html which I use on rainy days. On second thought, the bag itself may acts as a mud guard so I may not need the fender.

A 'Bike Friday" water bottle on a Moulton??? (The one on the seat tube)

There was a similar bike on our group ride Saturday, but with drop bars, a larger rear rack and also a small front rack.

Yes, it arrived with the NWT. Since I got the TSR I ride it exclusively because of the suspension and the split (easier to get in and out the trunk) but I still have a soft spot for BF.

Just wanted to update this thread with a ride report, particularly regarding the moustache bars.

Since this makeover to new bars and Capreo gearing, I've had many long rides. Longest was 84 miles (with 4K ft climbing), with 15-20mph winds. The bottom line is that I am very happy with the transition. The moustache bars gives me wide range of hand positions which are comfortable. On the long ride, I did 42 miles into headwind, yet could sustain a low profile and still be comfortable. I have Ultegra bar-end shifters which functioned well and were easy to access from the "sit-up" position of the moustache bars.

On the way back (with an incredible wind behind me), I flew back, sitting much higher. That was an incredible feeling - to go 42 miles with a 15-20mph wind at your back!!! I remember going 23.5 mph at one point, and not feeling any headwind, not hearing any wind sound. I maxed at 52mph on a descent, feeling very steady and comfy on the Moulton's long and suspended wheelbase.

The Capreo (9-26t cog, with 53/39 front rings) is wonderfully suited for Moulton's 20" wheels. I stayed in the big ring most of the time given the wide 9-26 range. The low gears were ideal for the moderate climbing on this route. (Loves my derailleurs!)

All in all, a wonderful setup, and I'm very glad to have made the change.
