20" wheels

In my estimation, 20" wheels are either the most common size in cycling today or the second most common behind 26".

Think about it. You're on a desert island and a bicycle tire washes up on shore. What size are you going to bet your rescue on?

I'd rather have a car door wash up on the beach, so when it gets hot out I can roll the window down.

Thank you.

I would not be surprised if 406 was more popular than 26".

What do you base your estimate on?

Chucky,
What use would a 20" tire be on a desert island, maybe as a lei?
" That would work"

Dunno. I'll have to get creative.

Just sayin people act like 20" wheels aren't a standard size when it seems to me they might be THE standard.

It's one reason I'm keeping my 20 incher as my apocalypse bike. While 26" might be slightly better for a road system decaying towards its natural state, 20" wheels and parts should be easier to come by. I think I got my bases covered with an 8" bike, a 700c bike, and a 20" bike, but if I had to have just one it'd definitely be the 20".

Bikes: 8

with the 2 of them, you are more likely to find a spare tire in Ecuador and Usuaia.

I like riding 20" wheels, the responsiveness and ride are great, I just wish there was a truly dedicated 20" MTB tire/tyre of high quality then I would build a proper 20" wheel MTB.

The only way to really know is to look at sales figures from a major manufacturer like Schwalbe or Kenda -- who, as far as I know, aren't releasing numbers.

Plus, there are two 20" standards -- 406 and 451. 406 is common, but most tires will be for kids' bikes and BMX; 451 is much harder to find.

I don't think it matters in the slightest though. What really matters is the availability of good tires for your specific purposes. If you like the 406/451 tires you're using, and you keep a few spares, you're golden.

Bikes: See my sig...

451 wheels are pretty uncommon... was thrilled to get a 451 equipped R20 and just as happy to find tyres and tubes locally but had to shop the BMX section.

406 on the other hand... they are everywhere and there is a really good selection of tyres available.
