It was taken near the corner of a building in front of some palms, and they were made in a bike factory. Too easy!!!

Question - can one actually deduce the answer(s) from clues in the photo, or will it have to be a wild guess?

The bikes appear to be a pair of Dahon Roos w/ the Radius Telescope handlepost, introduced in 2005. The palm trees suggest a tropical climate. Assuming the bikes are local, we are considering a country with a tropical climate where Dahon offered the Roo (after 2005). The bike archives on the Dahon website could be of use, provided the bikes are from 2008 or 2009 (only years available).

Was it taken in Barcelona, Spain? I know Bike Rental Barcelona uses Roos like those.

I read that Dahon has an office in the Netherlands - are the Roos manufactured there as well?

It's news to me that Dahons are manufactured anywhere but in the Far East.

OK, some pic analysis...

item - bamboo palms - could be anywhere but likely somewhere kinda tropical/sub-tropical.
item - white-washed tree trunk - could be anywhere ants are a problem, I have seen this in Israel, also in Australia
item - a bit of a vehicle in the background - actually looks like the cab of a ute! - so this could be Australia, since if it IS the cab of a ute, it is parked on the left side of the road, not that many places where people drive on the wrong side
item - Dahon Roo bikes - not available in the US (Dahon web site), ARE available in Australia
item - Building in background - hmmm not much there, just that it is not incompatible with what is around here

So my second guess is Australia, perhaps Brisbane or Darwin.

[edit] if not in China or Taiwan then I suppose Macau is left over...

Actually that could be in Hong Kong as well! More likely than in Australia. Fits all the visible clues in the pic.

Good eye! That certainly helps to narrow down the possibilities.

From the Dahon web site:
'We are headquartered in Los Angeles, California and our bicycles are assembled in our factories in Taiwan, Macau, the Czech Republic and China with parts sourced from the leading component manufacturers from around the world."

If in Cali, I would imagine probably close to Dahon HQ.
Honestly lot of houses with that kind of vegetation for bit run down area around any industrial complex in California. If someone has time, google mapping and cruising around Dahon HQ might not be bad idea. It could be also around older towns around beach (though most of side walk is much better maintained).

Looks way too tropical for Duarte, CA. Also, Loading Zone curbs (see the partially yellow curb in picture) in California are normally entirely YELLOW on their vertical & horizontal surfaces.
