Moulton serial number ??
 

I have a "F" frame Moulton that I am redoing/painting. I know/think it is a 1965 4 speed from the date on the rear hub but in the painting process I finally found the serial number 6439( )32. Can anyone interpret what that means if anything? The picture is as found. Roger

My gues would be that the frame was make in 64 and the hub in 65. Does the number really have () in it? Looks like my Huffy Moulton. They were imported in kits and assembled by Huffy. Looks like quite the project.

I have a 64 Huffy Moulton, F frame too.

It is either a ( ) or [ ] not really 100% sure. It does look much nicer now and the mechanical restoration is complete. I think it was a low mileage bike that a guy let sit out in the snow and rain behind his garage for years. I will post pictures when it is repainted. Needs to warm up a bit here so I can do that. It could be a Huffy the only things on it were a Moulton head badge and a Moulton 4 Speed decal on both sides of the down tube. Roger

I think the () is a zero. The way I would read it the frame is a 64, so made in 1964. The next 2 numbers are the week and the rest 032 means that it was the 32nd bike made in week 39.

Mine is stamped 64480052 and the numbers are hard to read. It is courious that mine has 8 digits while yours has seven. My hub is a 64 also.

According to Tony Hadland there were 5000 Huffy Moultons.

I would guess then that the ( ) is in fact two zeros 00 and then it would have the same number of numbers as yours does. Thank you. Roger

Quite a makeover! Congratulations. How is it running mechanically? Is the front fork working well?

Tally was $40 for the bike. $25 for a new 4 speed shifter. $80 for the tires. $10 worth of cables. $20 for paint. $8 for the decals. All the other parts were junk i had from other bike projects in my inventory. Total $183. It rides very nicely. The front fork works well. The Weinman brakes are better than the originals. The only other part I should replace is the front steering bellows but I have yet to find one. Roger

Maybe drop these guys a line Moulton Preservation They only use 'Snail mail' but say their response times are quick! Great job, good luck, must get around to tackiling my early rivet framed 3-speed F-frame some time.................................

six digits is the normal pattern for a bike built at Kirkby....if eight digits were used then the first two would be the year ie 65 and the bike built at Bradford on Avon...k

I think all the USA Moultons sold through Huffy started with the year.

Being new to folding bikes I find this Moulton/Huffy relationship ...well interesting to say the least. These two companies are at opposite ends of the spectrum, one is almost a household word for cheap bicycles and the other makes some of the most engineered and expensive bikes on the planet.

It was not always this way. In the 60's they imported Moultons and Raleighs.

So far I had the rear forks welded and bought new tires, added a newer saddle from a Raleigh and added some blue Blumels grips. I have drank the Moulton Kool-Aid.... there is no turning back!

Optional front carrier, I see - and rear forks indicate that it's a Mk 1.

Only the Stowaway was foldable...

I have a frame I'm trying to work out the age of and I was wondering how you'd interpret this: The number on the drive-side of the seat post collar reads 693098, and on the non-drive-side something that looks like WK 64, although I cant be sure of the W, its really hard to make out and my mind might be seeing a mirage after reading your thoughts on numbers that represent the week.

And what week 64 could be who knows.
